It's natural to be anxious when taking your new little Yorkshire Terrier puppy to the vet for the first time. It helps to know what will happen during this visit so you can be prepared and calm. This in turn will ease your Yorkie puppy's fears and will help the two of you become even closer. It's a time of bonding with your new Yorkie puppy and it's important that you are with them thru this new experience.
Please keep in mind that your vet is in business to make money so don't be surprised if that first vet bill is somewhat expensive. Usually $50 to $100 or more. Your vet might send you home with products that are useful but might not be absolutely needed at the time.
Don't skimp on the important products like vaccinations and de-wormings but many products suggested by your vet can be purchased thru online sites like Revival or Petedge and buying from these sites can literally save you $100's of dollars.
What to Expect: Upon arrival at the vet, make sure your Yorkie puppy is on a leash because you will need to set him down to sign in and fill out paperwork to create a medical record.
The clinic will ask for information about your pet, for example:
Your Yorkie's name
Date of birth
Previous vaccination data
You will also have to provide some personal information like your name, address, telephone number and workplace. Some vets will ask you to fill out a questionnaire to determine behavioral issues, housebreaking concerns or health concerns.
Once called in to the exam room, the technician will weigh your Yorkie, listen to their heart and collect the stool sample (taken in office or they may ask you to bring a fresh sample).
Next, the vet will come in and ask you a few questions like:
Where did you get your Yorkie and how long have you had the puppy?
What are you feeding your new puppy?
Do you have other pets?
Do you have small children?
Are you having any trouble with house training?
Any issues with chewing?
Does the puppy have toys, what are they?
Finally, the exam will begin by checking the following:
The skin for fleas, ticks, dry patches and abnormalities
The eyes, ears and teeth
The abdomen for enlarged organs or pain
The heart and lungs for irregular heartbeat, murmurs or congestion
The genitals for discharge and development
The joints for ease of movement
Due to the Yorkies small size, some of the initial vaccinations may not be given in bulk but spread out over a few days. Puppies should be vaccinated beginning at six to eight weeks and then again every three to four weeks until sixteen to twenty weeks of age. Then the vaccines become an annual event.
By the end of the visit, the stool sample results should be in and your puppy most likely will be given a de-wormer, even if the sample is negative. This will also be given again along with the future vaccinations. The vet will also talk with you about starting heartworm and flea prevention.
At last, your visit is complete. Don't forget to ask your veterinarian any questions or concerns you may have at this time. The front office will schedule your next appointment and you are free to go home and enjoy your happy, healthy new Yorkie puppy.
