Yorkshire Terrier
Description: The Yorkshire Terrier is a small breed of dog, measuring about 9 at the withers. It generally weighs between 4 ˝ and 7 ˝ pounds. The dog is also called the “Yorkie” by its admirers. The coat is probably the most immediately distinctive feature of the Yorkshire Terrier and it is long and silky, falling from either side of the body. The coat colors are blue and tan, although the puppies are born with black and tan coats. The Yorkie has a small head, which it carries proudly.
History: Yorkshire Terriers originated in northern England and are named after the city of Yorkshire. At the time of their inception, workers in the area’s textile mills and mines were plagued by high population of rats. An active, good-tempered dog was needed to help control the vermin. The working people of the area bred several types of terrier, including the Dandie Dinmont and Skye Terrier, together and created the Yorkshire Terrier. Initially, the Yorkie was a larger dog than we are now familiar with, but selective breeding reduced the size of the dogs.
Temperament: As the Yorkie is a terrier, a feisty group of dogs, it can sometimes be too brave for its own good. They will not hesitate to try to protect their human companions from other dogs, and generally do not tolerate other dogs well. They are loveable and affectionate dogs and bond strongly to their owners. Yorkshire Terriers are good with children, but will not appreciate rough handling by them. This is a vigilant little dog who will consider it a duty to guard the house, and bark a warning. They are intelligent dogs and learn quickly.
Health Issues: Yorkshire Terriers have a delicate bone structure, so fractures can occur from too rough handling or play. They can develop bronchitis and eye infections rather easily, too. Tooth decay is a problem, so sugary treats should not be given to Yorkies. Trouble with anesthetics can also arise, so be sure that your veterinarian is aware of and familiar with this. Whelping can also present difficulties and the bitch should be monitored closely when the puppies are due.
Grooming: The Yorkshire Terrier is a dog that needs intensive grooming if the coat is left long. The long, flowing coat needs to be brushed thoroughly every day to prevent tangles from forming and is often oiled to prevent the long hairs from breaking. In order to allow the dog to see more easily, the hair on the head is usually tied up in a topknot. One very nice aspect of the Yorkie’s coat is that it is considered to be hypoallergenic. Many people who are allergic to dogs can tolerate the Yorkshire Terrier. Many Yorkshire Terrier owners prefer to skip the intensive coat maintenance and have the coat clipped short.
Living Conditions: The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog that must live inside. It would be completely unable to tolerate cold winter conditions. Besides physical comfort, the Yorkie appreciates being near its human friends and is unhappy if separated from them.
