Wirehaired Pointing Griffon


Dog Breed Name: Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, Wire Haired Pointing Griffon, Griffon d'arret a poil dur Korthals, Wire-haired Korthals, Pointing Griffon.

Description: The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a medium-sized dog with a harsh, wiry coat. The coat is preferably gray with tan to brown markings and a brown head. Other acceptable colors: chestnut brown, white and brown, roan, and white and orange.

History: The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was developed by Eduard Karel Korthals in 1873.

Temperament: Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are known as intelligent, extremely eager to please, friendly dogs. Great Swimmers and they love the water.

Height: On average 20 to 24 inches.
Weight: On average 50 to 60 pounds.

Health Problems: The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon can be prone to hip dysplasia but this will depend on the line and parents and ancestors of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon puppy.

Living Condition: The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a very active dog and needs room to roam. Not suggested for an apartment setting unless you have an adequate fenced yard. They tend to like the colder climates also.

Exercise Required: A Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is full of energy and requires regular exercise. An adequate fenced yard or land where the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon can run and play is strongly suggested. They tend to like to run or take fast walks also.

Life Expectancy: 11-14 years on average

Litter Size: 3-5 puppies per litter on average

Origin: Developed around 1870 by a Dutch breeder by the last name of Korthal, hense one of the names of the breed. Recognized by the AKC in 1887.
