Whoodles Dog - Whoodles Dog Breed Information
Whoodles Breed Profile
Description. The Whoodles is a hybrid, or designer, dog. They are of medium size being 12-20 inches in height and weighing between 20 and 40 pounds. The original dogs for this breed are a cross between a pedigree Soft coated Wheaten Terrier and a pedigree Poodle. After the original crossing the Whoodles should only be bred with another Whoodles but it is possible for them to be mated with either of the original parent breeds as well. It is important that you check the percentages of each breed in the dog you are getting; the breeder can give you this information. The overall look also depends which bloodline is favored by the father and which is favored by the mother. Generally, though, they should have a head that is proportional or a hint larger with a medium length neck leading to a deep chest with muscular shoulders. Their back will be straight and their rear legs are strong and powerful looking. Their body length is a little more than the dogs’ height.
History. All hybrids have a limited history. The modern trend is to find a dog that is easier to care for and requires less exercise, whilst being easy to train. The Poodle is a popular choice for designer dogs as they are highly intelligent and are the easiest dogs to train. As time goes on and when all the excitement dies down, around the designer breeds, the reputable breeders will try to lay down reliable standards. The disreputable dealers will have moved on to their next money spinner. When a reliable standard is introduced the hybrids will be easier to decide on which dog you want as their traits will be more reliable. The shift towards temperament rather than abilities will have to be recognized by the kennel clubs and some of today’s hybrids will become tomorrow’s pedigrees.
Temperament. A Whoodles will be affectionate and intelligent with a playful and friendly disposition. They will enjoy playing with older children but will not get on well with rough or disrespectful children. If they are well socialized they will be quite happy with other canine pets. It is important to assert yourself as this dogs' leader and to train them properly. Training needs to be given in a firm, fair fashion with lots of praise when a task is performed correctly. If the dog makes a mistake do not shout or chastise the dog just move on. If this breed detects a weak minded owner they will try to take over the home and assert themselves as the pack leader. A dog is always happiest when they know their place in the family. A Whoodles will require two walks a day of about 30 minutes, but will be happy with more. Playtime will give them the mental stimulus they require. If the dogs’ needs are met you will have a loving and lovable pet that is a pleasure to be around.
Health issues. The Whoodles has not been around long enough for reliable health information but it is an idea to check with the breeder about possible health issues. A good breeder will be able to show you a medical history and health certificates for the parents of their puppies. If a breeder can’t help with this then go to a better breeder, who can.
Grooming. It is safe to assume you will need to brush the Whoodles every couple of days and that you will need to take them to the salon every 6-12 weeks.
Living conditions. As long as they get adequate exercise and mental stimulation the Whoodles will be happy living in an apartment.
