Description: The Wheaten Terrier is a dog breed that comes from Ireland.
There are four coat varieties: Traditional Irish, Heavy Irish, English,
and American. They are considered to be hypoallergenic, a trait popular
with allergic or asthmatic dog owners.
History: The Wheaten Terrier was bred as a do it all farm dog. The
Wheaten was skilled in herding, watching and guarding livestock and
killing rodents, especially rats.
Temperament: The Wheaten Terrier is a medium size dog that is considered
agile, strong and well coordinated. Loves children and they make great
watch dogs. In general they get along well with other dogs.
Height: Male Dogs: 18 to 20 inches. Female Dogs: 17 to 19 inches. On
average.
Weight: Male Dogs: 35 to 45 pounds. Female Dogs 30 to 40 pounds. On
average.
Health Problems: Prone to protein wasting disease, both PLE and PLN and
can have flea allergies. Again, with any breed this related directly to
the bloodline and parents genetics.
Living Condition: The Wheaten Terrier doesn't like hot weather. Can live
in an apartment or condo.
Exercise Required: The Wheaten requires moderate exercise. Daily walks
or play time in the yard will do.
Life Expectancy: 11-15 years on average
Litter Size: 3-5 puppies per litter on average
Origin: The Wheaten Terrier originally came from Ireland and is
considered one of the oldest Irish dog breeds. The Wheaten Terrier
wasn't recognized by the AKC until 1973.
