Description: The Wetterhoun is a medium sized dog. Their coat is thick
and curly except for the head, ears and legs, where the coat is
smoother; the water repellant coat is described as having a greasy feel.
Coat color can be solid black or brown, or black with white, or brown
with white, with or without white ticking or roan marks.
History: The ancestral type of the Wetterhoun was developed at least 400
years ago in the Dutch province of Friesland.
Temperament: The Wetterhoun is an excellent gun dog. Great on both land
and in the water. The hard part is getting over their strong will. Need
to be trained early and often.
Height: 21 to 23 inches. On average
Weight: 33 to 44 pounds. On average
Living Condition: The Wetterhoun needs a fenced yard or plenty of room
to play fetch and run. Not ideal for an apartment setting.
Exercise Required: The Wetterhoun needs lots of exercise, including
daily walks or runs.
Life Expectancy: 11-15 years on average
Litter Size: 3-5 puppies per litter on average
Origin: The Wetterhoun name comes from the Dutch language. It means
"Water dog" as you probably guessed. This breed is over 400 years old.
