Weimardoodle Dog - Weimardoodle Dog Breed Information
Weimardoodle Breed Profile
Description. The Weimardoodle is a hybrid, or designer, dog. The original was bred by crossing a pedigree Poodle with a pedigree Weimaraner. After the original mix the Weimardoodle should be bred with another Weimardoodle but it could also be bred with either of the original parent breeds which means their appearance can vary quite a lot. Commonly, with designer dogs, the smaller of the breeds are used but this is not always the case so you can also get a tremendous difference in the sizes of the Weimardoodle. However if it were from the smaller dogs you could expect your Weimardoodle to be 17-21 inches in height and weigh about 30-50 pounds. The coat can be anything from short and hard to long and fluffy. It is always best to speak to the breeders to check what your dog is going to look like.
History. The modern designer dogs have a very limited history. They were originally thought of and bred to be better for modern life. With the pedigree dogs they were classified by their general appearance but mostly for what task they were bred. In today’s world the dog is almost always a pet, as working dogs are a rarity. Some of the hunting dogs are still used for the purposes they were bred but even these are in the minority. As pets you require a dog to be reasonably easy to care for and train, whilst being a good companion. The days of having a dog that walks for 4 hours a day are well behind us. With so many people living in apartments we can not have these dogs as pets. With these factors in mind, and more, the designer breeds, or hybrids, were started and this where the Weimardoodle and others come in.
Temperament. The poodle is classed as one of the most intelligent dogs and the easiest to train, which is why it is very popular as one of the breeds for the hybrids. The Weimardoodle inherits this intelligence and is a fairly easy dog to train. They are affectionate and attentive and become particularly attached to one member of the household. They need to be socialized well when young but may be aloof or wary of strangers. They need to know you are the master and they are below you in the pack order. They require firm positive training that is fair and consistent. Do not try to teach your dog any tricks until they are well founded in the basics. With the right treatment and daily exercise, of body and mind, you will have an excellent pet that is fun to be with and enjoys you.
Health issues. With a life expectancy of 10-13 years the Weimardoodle is generally healthy but it is important to check the health issues of the parent breeds. Get the breeder to show you any health records and certificates. The parent breeds have some issues and you should look out for possible PRA, Hip dysplasia hypothyroidism and other eye problems.
Grooming. This will depend entirely on the coat of your Weimardoodle and could be anything from a weekly brush to daily brushing with a trip to the salon every 4-6 weeks.
Living conditions. This dog requires quite a lot of exercise and will require at least a medium sized yard. They can live in a large apartment but are better in a house with a large garden.
