WEIMARANER Dog Breed
Description: This is a fairly large dog with the Weimaraners height, in the dog, being 24-27 inches and the bitches being 22-25 inches. The weight in the dog is 55-70 pounds and in the bitches it is 50-65 pounds. This breed is a working dog that is athletic but lean. The head is medium in size. The muzzle is straight and has a grey nose. The bite is scissor. This dog has wide set eyes that are blue-grey, grey, or amber in shade. The ears are high set; these are long and a pendent shape that hang down, folded forward along the side of the head. It has webbed feet that are compact with straight front legs. The tail is docked to 1½ inches in length, in countries that permit docking. In the Weimaraner, the body slopes downward from the shoulders to the rump this gives an athletic look. This dog has a smooth short coat that runs flat to the body. Colouring is lighter on the ears and head, all shades of grey are accepted. It is most common in shades of silver-grey and mouse-grey having darker shades that blend in smoothly. There is a rare longhaired variety. It is also accepted for a small white marking to be on the chest. This dogs' life expectancy is 10-12 years.
History: The Weimaraner comes from the German hunting dog and came from the Bloodhound several centuries ago. This breed has been in a painting by Van Dyck in the early 1600’s. Here is a good all round hunting dog. The Weimaraner was first in the USA in 1929; these were imported by a man called Howard Knight. They had good publicity in the Sesame Street show, dressed up in human clothes. The talents these dog show are in; hunting and pointing, tracking, police work, search and rescue and as a guide dog for the disabled. This dog is also known for its great abilities as an agility dog.
Temperament: The Weimaraner is a happy and intelligent dog. This dog is very good with children but due to its great strength and size you will have to teach it to “sit”, on command, early on. This will stop it becoming a dog jumps up and knocks people over, like children or the elderly. This dog will also need good short leash work, to prevent its strong eager pulling and this will help you to establish the leadership role. This breed needs good strong leadership to follow, and if this is not the case, problems will occur such as stubbornness. This breed is not to be trusted with non-canine pets as it has a strong hunting instinct. Socialize this dog well with people of all ages, and lots of different things and situations will help this dog to have confidence, and be better with other dogs if they have been mixed well as a puppy. It cannot be stated enough that this dog needs, and craves, great leadership to get the best from this breed. This gives the dog mental stability and order. Regular and good walks are required to stop the dog becoming restless. Hash discipline will not work, and they will respond to praise and small food treats far better than hitting. Training has to start early as this is a powerful dog. You have to have good consistent training for the Weimaraner to respond well. Barking can become a problem as, like its ancestors’, it can be prone to excessive barking. Training to stop this may be required. This dog is a good all-around hunting dog with great abilities and the need to please you.
Health issues: The Weimaraner is a breed that can get bloat, this is possibly life threatening but can be easily prevented by feed the dog two or three small meals daily and not within ½ hour of exercising. Other things we see about their health are; hip dysplasia, hyper tropic osteodystrophy, which can happen due to fast growing and tumours.
Grooming: The Weimaraner is easy to groom and will just require brushing every other day.
Living conditions: The Weimaraner is a high energy level breed and can only do well in an apartment if the dog has had really good exercise daily. This dog will need a large garden and good fencing due to their hunting abilities.
