Toy Manchester Terrier Dog - Toy Manchester Terrier Dog Breed Information
Toy Manchester Terrier Dog Breed
Description. The Toy Manchester Terrier is obviously a small dog, hence the name toy. They stand some 10-12 inches tall and weigh a mere 6-8 pounds. There is a larger version of this dog, which is the standard Manchester terrier. The Toy Manchester Terrier is a compact tough little dog that is muscular and smooth. They have a narrow long head that is tight skinned. The head tapers and is quite long with the nose taking up approximately half of the overall size. Their v shaped ears stand erect and give the impression of an intelligent dog, which is always alert. The ears are sometimes cropped, in countries that allow this practice. Their almond shaped eyes are quite small and dark in coloration. The teeth should meet in a level or scissor bite. Their body is quite long and well muscled with powerful legs, for their size. The Toy Manchester Terriers coat is short and smooth coming in a classic black and tan, witch has clear edges, and the colors do not blend gradually.
History. A Toy Manchester Terrier is one of the oldest breeds of terrier still around today. They are originally rat hunters, and other small vermin. John Hulme is responsible for originating this breed and he did so to obtain the ultimate ratting dog. These dogs used to be competitive rat killers, and one of the early dogs was reputed to have killed 100 rats in just over 6 minutes, in the ring. In Victorian times small dogs were very popular, in England, and this breed were particularly liked as in those days rats were a problem to lots of peoples' day to day life. Originally bred from crossing a whippet and a black and tan terrier, gives this dog a distinctive look.
Temperament. Although a small dog the Toy Manchester Terrier can be very brave and thinks nothing of taking on anything they feel is a threat, even when outnumbered. They are loyal and eager to please with a lively and normally happy overall demeanor. Whilst they are an independent and free thinking dog, they love to be with their family and join in whenever they can. They will always want to be where any action is and love to play with children. When walking, this dog must be kept on the leash, as their hunting instincts will lead them to the chase. As an instinctive hunter this is not a breed to leave with smaller household pets. It is vital to assert yourself as the master of this breed, to avoid the infamous small dog syndrome which is a problem caused by owners and not a trait of any dog. Socialize this dog well and ensure plenty of exercise and you will have a wonderful pet that, on occasions, can seem to be everywhere at once.
Health issues. Some lines of the Toy Manchester Terrier can suffer from Glaucoma and bleeding disorders but in general they are a healthy breed living 15 years or more.
Grooming. The Toy Manchester Terrier requires hardly any grooming, just give them a brush now and then and check the ears regularly for any signs of infection. They shed very little, if at all.
Living conditions. Toy Manchester Terriers will do fine in an apartment and as long as they are exercised and stimulated well they will not even require a yard or garden. They are a short haired dog and prefer warmer climates, even though they originated in England.
