Common Name: Poodle, Toy Poodle, Miniature Poodle. Country of Origin: France. History: It is believed the Teacup Poodle dog breed originally came from Standard Poodles and was simply bred down to reach the Toy and Miniature sizes. Some historians say that the Toy Poodle may be a distant relative of the Maltese. The standard size Poodle dog was bred to be a hunter of varmints and other game. Both the Miniature and Toy Poodle dog was bred to be a companion dog only.
The Mini and Toy Poodles were very popular with royalty in Europe and France and the paintings of that time depict many Poodles with their royal masters. The Poodle dog breed became popular after World War two when they were introduced to the United States.
The Standard, Miniature and Toy Poodle Breed all look exactly alike except for their sizes. That is why I believe that the Toy and Miniature Poodle are direct descendants of the Standard Poodle and not relatives of the Maltese. In my opinion the Mini and Toy Poodles were simply bred down from standard size poodles because royalty and owners wanted a smaller version of the standard poodle that they could take everywhere they went and carry easily.
