Tamaskan Wolf Dog - Tamaskan Wolf Dog Breed Information
Tamaskan Wolf Dog Breed Profile
Description. The Tamaskan Wolf Dog is a large dog standing some 25-28 inches in height for the males and the female being a little less at 24-27 inches. The female weighs in at 50-84 pounds and the male is 66-99 pounds. They are wolf like in appearance and are well muscled powerful dogs. They are very similar in size to an Alsatian, with a bushy tail. The Tamaskan Wolf Dog ears are triangular and stand erect, facing forward. The eyes are wide set and dark colored, in the proportionally sized head. About half, the entire size of, the head is taken up with the muzzle which is tipped by a black nose. The neck is average in length leading down to the powerful front shoulders and medium depth chest. The Tamaskan Wolf Dog coat is thick and smooth coming in two main colours, wolf grey and a red grey.
History. Originating in Finland the Tamaskan dog was a mix of huskies, imported from the USA in the first parts of the 1980s. and then added the Alaskan Malamute, the Siberian husky, and German shepherd. The idea behind this mix was to breed an intelligent dog that was good for working and looked like a wolf the end result being the Tamaskan wolf dog. To improve the gene pool other husky dogs were added to the breeding. Nowadays breeders can only mate within the existing pool so a Tamaskan wolf dog can only be mated with another Tamaskan wolf dog. As a breed they are now to be seen in countries other than Norway; England and America being two of these. They are gaining in popularity and their numbers are on the rise.
Temperament. The Tamaskan wolf dog is surprisingly friendly and although it looks like a wolf it is a good playmate for children. They tend to accept other dogs, as long as they have been socialized as young as possible. They have a great deal of power and energy but are very gentle. They like to work and have been known as sled pullers, for racing. As a pack dog they are not too happy when left alone, they much prefer company which can be human or canine. They also require mental stimulation as the Tamaskan wolf dog is an intelligent dog. It is vital to train this dog well and to assert yourself as their leader. If the dog thinks they are in charge you will get behavior problems. Training should be done in a firm, fair, and calm manner, do not shout at the dog as it will only alienate or confuse them.
Health issues. This is a fairly new breed and whilst there are some health concerns from the parent breeds there is insufficient information. It is a good idea to check the health records and any certificates with the breeder. Living 14-15 years the Tamaskan wolf dog seems a relatively healthy breed.
Grooming. The Tamaskan wolf dog is a seasonal shedder and more care may need to be given when this occurs but in general a weekly brush will be plenty for this breed.
Living conditions. This is a very active breed and need at least two long walks a day, probably more, or a job to do. They do not get on well if left alone for any length of time, and can become destructive. They are suitable for an active family that has somebody at home most of the time. They are not at all suited to apartment life and require a large garden or yard.
