STUMPY TAIL CATTLE Dog Breed
Description. The Stumpy Tail Cattle dog is a medium size dog being some 17 to 20 inches in height and weighing 35-50 pounds. Their head is in proportion to their body, with oval medium-sized eyes. With broad based ears that are wide set to the head, these are medium-sized and taper ending in a point. The muzzle also tapers to a point and is medium in size. Their nose can be black or other colours dependent on their coat. They have a level or scissor a bite. The stumpy tail cattle dog is a very muscular and strong neck leading down to a strong deep chest. They have a level body which slopes gently towards the back. The front legs are totally straight, when looked at from the front. The back legs are also totally straight, when viewed from the rear, are very heavyset muscular strong. They have short toes and their rounded feet. Their coat is harsh and dense, also being medium to short in length. Their coats come, most commonly, in either blue or red, both of which can be speckled, and may have some black on the head.
History. The history of the Stumpy Tail Cattle dog is fairly short. The original dogs were bred by crossing the black-and-white bobtail with the dingo and the breed was first recognized in 1988 by the Australian National kennel club.
Temperament. This is a free spirited being also watchful, energetic, brave, alert, and obedient. They are very loyal to the family but can be suspicious of strangers. They are a born working dog and have an instinct for controlling cattle. It is an attentive dog that listens for and obeys commands well and loves nothing more than working with their master. As with many intelligent dogs problems can occur if this breed becomes bored. If you wish to own one of these dogs it must either be exercised extremely well or put to some sort of work. The Stumpy Tail Cattle dog is not a dog to lounge around the house. Due to their instincts for controlling cattle it is not unknown for this dog to nip peoples ankles in an attempt to herd them together. What is that this can be very entertaining it is probably a trait you'd like to try and train out of them, but as it is instinctive you may not succeed. This dog requires to see clearly that the humans are their packed leaders; failure to do this may result in the dog and not being safe with children. As long as they are trained adequately with plenty of affection they make excellent household pets and working dogs that are good with children. Being quite boisterous there is always a risk of them knocking over small children though.
Health issues. This breed mostly has insignificant health issues.
Grooming. The Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs needs very little care to their weather resistant coat. Simple brushing and combing will be enough to keep their coat in good order, and they will probably enjoy the fuss they get, when they brushed. They are seasonal shedders and should only be bathed when necessary.
Living conditions. Having a great deal of stamina the Stumpy Tail Cattle dog requires a loss of exercise. If they do not get enough exercise, they can become destructive. They need it least a large yard and garden and are not suited to apartment life, they prefer acreage.
