STANDARD POODLE Dog Breed
Description. The standard poodle is classed as a medium to large dog. They stand 15 inches in height or more with the male dog weighing 45 to 70 pounds and the female bitch weighing 45 to 60 pounds. If showing these dogs they should be trimmed to give a square appearance to the dog. The standard poodle have a long straight muzzle, and oval shaped eyes that are dark. Their ears hang close to the side of the head they are flatten and long in appearance. They have a highly set tail that is often docked, in countries that permit this. They come in to coat varieties, being either corded or curly. The standard poodles come in a variety of colours, all of which are solid. Colours would include rain, apricots, silver, white, brown, red, black, blue, and cafe-au-lait. There is a parti-colour available, but this is not yet recognized within the standards of showing.
History. Standard Poodles have a history, within Europe, that stretches back over 400 years and can be seen in 15th century paintings, and in bas-reliefs that date back as far as the first century. There is some debate as to where the standard poodles originated; France has laid claim to the origins whereas the American kennel club recognizes the Germans as the original breeders, Brett has been used for a water dog. It is known. However, that the French water dog (which is now extinct) is one of these dogs’ ancestors. The original poodle cut was to assist the dog in swimming more efficiently and making them easier to dry afterwards. The traditional pom-pom look around the joints was originally to keep them warm when swimming. Historically, both France and Germany used the standard poodle as a gundog. They were also commonly used to find truffles and retrieve shot fowl from the water.
Temperament. The standard poodle is a good-natured dog that is noble and graceful and appears proud. They are highly intelligent, cheerful and enjoyable, which contributes to making them one of the easiest breeds to train. They do require a good level of exercise to prevent them becoming anxious or highly strung. The standard poodle are sensitive to tone of voice and training to accommodate this. Training should be conducted in a consistent fashion, always being calm, and giving plenty of fuss when the task is completed correctly. As with any dog you should never chastise the standard poodle if it gets something wrong or misbehaves.
Health issues. Unfortunately poodles do have several genetic problems. They can suffer from cataracts PRA and runny eyes. Skin conditions including allergies are very common. Hip dysplasia and ear infections also very common. They can also be susceptible to Von Willebrand's Disease. Having said this they are actually a long-lived breed at 12 to 15 years life expectancy and sometimes even more.
Grooming. Poodles require a lot of grooming this is especially so if you're intending to show the dogs. Due to their skin problems, it is always an idea to have them professionally groomed, unless you are suitably experienced to perform it yourself. Even shampooing is better done by a professional. Regular brushing and combing of the coat is necessary and can be carried out by the owner, paying particular attention to the ears to reduce the risk of infections.
Living conditions. The standard poodle can adapt to life in an apartment, but they will require a reasonable amount of exercise. It will also require a small yard or garden.
