STABYHOUN Dog Breed

Description. The Stabyhoun is a sturdily built dog of the point of family that is longer in the body and its height. They stand at 19 to 21 inches in height and weigh 40 to 55 pounds. They have a close fitted skin, and a long coat of hair. Their ears were somewhat reminiscent of a trowel and thanked on the side of the head. They have bushy hair on all their legs and their tail. The Stabyhoun breed as very large feet for its size which enables it to climb swim and walk for extended periods. They come in a variety of colours and for show purposes acceptable colours are orange and brown with some white, or black. They can come in other colours, but if you are wishing to show these dogs you would need to check on local standard. National standard does not accept spots within the white coat.

History. The Stabyhoun name originates in the Netherlands, although the ancestors of this breed were spaniels introduced to the Friesland province, of the Netherlands, by the Spanish conquistadors. The Stabyhoun has been found in descriptions from as early as 1800, and is a gun dog. Those commonly used for small game or bird hunting it also has some success at catching moles. It is an excellent tracker and makes a superior watchdog. It has also been used as a draught dog. The look of this dog is very similar today when compared to its earlier ancestors. In previous times they were also mixed with other freezing breeds. However, since the breed was officially recognized in 1942 crossbreeding has ceased.

Temperament. These are intelligent dogs that make an obedient, gentle pet. They are very keen wall guard dogs, although they are neither vicious nor snappy. The general temperament is tolerant, friendly and willing, which makes them an excellent companion to children. General exercise of this dog is fairly simple as they loved to retrieve. Playing catch or fetch with a stick or ball, especially in water, will entertain your pet. The Stabyhoun is a patient dog that is also peaceful, obedient, and sociable, as long as they are adequately trained. As with many intelligent dogs training is very important, as without it they may just decide to make up their own mind. As with all dogs, establishing yourself as the alpha is vital to having an enjoyable and healthy relationship between master and dog. The Stabyhoun have apparent unending patience, and will sit in the field for hours, waiting for the shot to be taken and their opportunity to retrieve the game.

Health issues. Whilst the Stabyhoun is a very healthy breed with a life expectancy of 13 and 14 years, there is still some slight incidence of hip dysplasia. However, the Dutch breeders are trying to remove this by not allowing any dogs that show signs of hip problems to be used for breeding.

Grooming. The breed sheds twice a year, but apart from that are very easy to care for. Washing or bathing should be avoided, if at all possible. The Stabyhoun tends to generate a pleasant odour.

Living conditions. Generally, the Stabyhoun is calm indoors as long as adequate exercise is provided. They do well in cold climates, so long as there is shelter for them. They will do best with a medium-sized yard or garden and are not really suited to apartment life.
