SOUTH AFRICAN BOERBOEL Dog Breed
Description. The South African Boerboel is a large intelligent and strong working dog. It has good muscle structure that is well balanced and developed. They are one of the few dogs you can tell their sex by their appearance, the dogs look masculine and bitches look feminine in overall appearance. They are a well proportioned dog and nothing looks out of place. Their head is broad whilst being short and deep, with muscular cheeks. They have a strong broad rump and muscular chest. The South African Boerboel short tail is straight and attached high to the body. When standing the front legs are vertical and their front paws are slightly larger than the back. The South African Boerboel males are 25-28 inches in height and the females 23 to 25 1/2 inches. Their weight is between 154 and 200 pounds. They have a short sleek coat that is very dense and comes in a cream white, brindle, brown, tawny, and a reddish brown.
History. The South African Boerboel is a fairly young breed, which is still being developed. They were apparently developed from the original dogs taken with the Dutch to South Africa when the British settlers arrived in 1820 they brought other large breeds of dog, because of their robustness. The British brought such dogs as Bulldogs and mastiffs. Legend has it that after the Anglo Boer War which took place in 1902 the original dogs bred by the Boers were mixed with some of the English breeds, which led to the South African Boerboel we see today.
Temperament. The South African Boerboel is an intelligent dog that is both obedient and reliable. There are self assured with a generally fearless nature, which made them excellent watch and guard dogs. They are a very affectionate to their owner and can be quite playful. Care should be taken with young children as this is a very large dog and, whilst not malicious, can easily knock over a small or frail person. It is important to assert yourself with this breed. They need to know who their master is or problems can occur. The South African Boerboel will guard the family and the home to such an extent that they may not permit visitors when their owners are not present, unless they are particularly familiar with the person. However, should a visitor arrive for the first time when the owners are in the house, if properly introduced, they will greet them as a friend. It is also vital that the South African Boerboel dog understands humans are above them in the chain of command, which would include any children in the house. If appreciated and cared for correctly with adequate training, they make an excellent household pet. As they are a large dog they do require a reasonable amount of exercise.
Health issues. South African Boerboels tended to be a very healthy breed with no significant problems.
Grooming. They are an average shedder that only requires occasional brushing. Bathing monthly will keep the dog clean and presentable.
Living conditions. The South African Boerboel should have at least a fenced garden that is large enough for them to run around and play in. Whilst they are capable of living outdoors it is not a good idea to just leave them outside of the house all the time, as they are very protective and will not take kindly to passers by. They are not a dog that can live in an apartment.
