Small Munsterlander Pointer Dog - Small Munsterlander Pointer Dog Breed Information
Small Munsterlander Pointer Breed Profile
Description: The Small Munsterlander Pointer is a retrieving dog. In look they are like the Pointer and have a distinguished skull. The eyes are medium in size and almond in shape these are dark brown in color. The ears are broad and are high set. These lie close to the head and hang downward ending at the corner of the mouth, these taper towards the tip. The muzzle is long and straight and the whole nose is colored brown. The teeth meet in a scissor bite. The tail is high set and tapers to the tip this is medium in length being well feathered. The body is firm and well muscled. The height of the male is 21.6 inches and the female is 20.8 inches. Here is a dog that should be medium in size showing balance and elegance. The coat is of medium length that is close lying and can have a slight wave, also being water repellent. This should be dense. The color is brown and white, brown roan with brown patches, brown ticking or brown mantle they are allowed to have tan on the muzzle, eyes and anus but this has to be markings.
History: The Small Munsterlander Pointers’ history goes back to the 13th or 14th century. They have been bred to be working dogs and are pointers, trackers and retrievers. They are good water dogs and have a great nose. They come from Germany and have been used as a hunting dog for their whole history. They are fairly new to the Americans who are finding that this dog is great for versatile hunting and are now used mainly for hunting upland birds and waterfowl.
Temperament: Here is a dog that is calm and family orientated but when out working is full bore and there is no stopping the working dog keenness to work. They are more balanced than a lot of hunting dogs and you do not see the highly strung behavior indoors with this breed. They love human contact and are loyal to the owner. Here is a dog that is intelligent and always keen to learn. They are alert and friendly to all they meet. They need an owner that can match their needs for walks and training as they stay puppy like for longer than most dogs. The owner needs to show natural leadership and set house rules that are kept. This is a dog that needs to work but can combine the roles of family pet and hunting dog well. They need good daily walks and both mental and physical exercise, daily. The Small Munsterlander Pointer is good with other pets and it is best to raise them together. They are good with children and will love to play fetch, even more so if it involves water. They need a family that is active and do well with them.
Health issues: There are a few lines that have health issues but these are not many and good breeders can show you all health certificates to show clean health as well as good blood line history.
Grooming: The Small Munsterlander Pointer needs little grooming, as the coat is of a working dog line so brushing the coat through weekly is normally enough. The coat doesn’t need bathing as this can strip the oils of the coat but if the need arises then they can be bathed with a gentle shampoo.
Living conditions: While it is fair to say this dog can live in an apartment if they have been given enough exercise both mentally and physically they will need a medium size garden with good fencing, to stop the odd chase that can happen They would be better suited to urban life or country living.
