Schnoodle Dog - Schnoodle Dog Breed Information
Schnoodle Dog Breed Profile
Description. The Schnoodle is a hybrid, or designer, dog. They were first bred by crossing a pedigree Poodle with a pedigree Schnauzer. Because of the wide range of sizes available in the parent breeds it is necessary for you to confirm the size of Schnoodle the breeder is supplying. It is most common for the smaller dogs of both breeds to be used but it could be a shock if you end up with a dog that is twice the size you expected, so check. Typically the Schnoodle will be 7-16 pounds in weight and stand 10-12 inches high. They are quite difficult to give a proper description as they can take characteristics from either parent so they could have a medium curly coat or a smooth thick coat that is harsh in feel, or anything in-between. They will tend to have a large head with a medium muzzle and a short muscular neck. The chest is average and the shoulders will be muscular as will the hind legs. They can come in numerous colours.
History. Both parents are classed as non shedders so the Schnoodle will also be a non shedder this gives the benefit that the dog will be okay for people who have dog allergies, Hypoallergenic as a lot of people say. Nowadays people want pets but do not have the time to spend with them. For this reason the hybrids have come about, they tend to be bred for intelligence, ease of training and commonly are small so they require less exercise. Historically dogs were classed by the work they did however today there are very few working dogs about and most are pets so the emphasis is changing from abilities over to temperament and attractiveness.
Temperament. This is an intelligent and highly trainable dog. You must establish yourself as the pack leader with this dog and they must be treated as a dog. Once the dog knows its place in the family it will be happy. If it believes itself to be the pack leader then you will have behavior problems. The dog will start to discipline you as a member of their pack. As an intelligent dog that responds well to training you should have little difficulty in getting this breed to behave in a proper fashion and they will become a loving pet that can be active and entertaining. They do require daily exercise and mental stimulation to keep them fit and healthy. They will love to play with children and this will exercise their mind and body, but is not a replacement for the daily walk.
Health issues. The Schnoodle can suffer hip dysplasia eye disorders and patella luxation. It is vital to check the health records of the parents, with the breeder. If they can not supply records and certificates you should consider going to a different breeder.
Grooming. As with both the parent breeds the Schnoodle will require frequent brushing, to untangle the hair. They may require cutting as frequently as every 6 weeks but this will depend a great deal on the actual type of coat they have.
Living conditions. With proper exercise and playtime the Schnoodle will live pretty much anywhere but would like a small to medium yard or garden. They are good for an apartment.
