Schapendoes Dog - Schapendoes Dog Breed Information
Schapendoes Dog Breed Profile
Description. The Schapendoes is a medium sized dog standing up to 20 inches in height and weighing anything between 26 and 55 pounds with the females being a little smaller than the males. Their coat is thick and long. The ears are small and hang to the side of the head, and their muzzle is quite short compared to the rest of the head. They have a short neck that leads down to the deep chest with muscular shoulders and straight front legs. The body length is about the same as the height of the dog and the back is straight. The Schapendoes rear legs are powerful and muscular. The tail is mid-low set and is carried with a little curl.
History. The Schapendoes originated in the Netherlands in the Drenthe area. Although these dogs were first seen in a dog show as long back as the 1870s the breed was first recognized, by the Dutch Kennel club, in 1952. WWII nearly saw the extinction of this breed but a few dedicated breeders managed to locate most of the few remaining dogs and started a breeding program to save the Schapendoes. The schapendoes is still a rare breed, especially in the USA. As a working dog they could be trained to perform many tasks and were considered a good all-rounder.
Temperament. The Schapendoes is an intelligent, active, friendly breed. They make good pets if properly trained and socialized as early as possible. They adore playing and will play for hours, if given the opportunity, with the children. They can be a little stubborn and are self reliant, but are also very affectionate and love their family. Because they are a working breed they will require lots of exercise or they will be happy if put to work. It is very important to assert yourself as this dogs pack leader and to train them well. The dog will like to know its place in the hierarchy of the house as they will only become confused otherwise. If the dog believes they are in charge behavior issues will occur, as they will try to get you to behave as a good dog should, within their pack. The Schapendoes make a good watchdog but may not be too reliable as a guard dog; they will however alert you to anything out of the ordinary.
Health issues. The Schapendoes is a healthy breed with no serious recorded health issues but it is always a good idea to check the medical history of both parents and view any certificates that are available.
Grooming. The general grooming of a Schapendoes is fairly simple as they only require regular brushing or combing and their cut hair as needed. Bathing should be done only when needed.
Living conditions. This is a breed that needs acreage and benefits from wide open views. This is a dog that can become a problem in cities as they require an open field of vision. The mere fact they can only see as far as the next building gives them a claustrophobic sense and they will have problems. The Schapendoes requires at least a semi-rural area in which to live, preferably with an active family. They are defiantly not suited to apartment life.
