Puppy Toilet Training

Below is a step by step method of puppy toilet training tips to ensure your sweet new furry family member is potty trained in no time at all!

When beginning it is important to have the correct equipment to make your puppy feel at home.

First, begin with the simplest of puppy toilet training tips

Puppy Toilet Training Tip #1: Take your puppy outside where you will want him to relieve himself to familiarize your puppy with his surroundings. This should be a relaxed visit.

Puppy Toilet Training Tip #2: Take your puppy into the home to relax and play.

Puppy Toilet Training Tip #3: When the puppy becomes tired, take him outside to relieve himself and then place him in the crate that is slightly larger than his bed with no food or water inside. Keep the puppy in the crate for a short amount of time.

Puppy Toilet Training Tip #4: After the short time is up, take the puppy out of the crate and directly outside to relieve himself again. One positive puppy potty training tip includes praising your puppy when he has done something right.

When he has “done his business” in the proper place, this is a great time to praise the puppy with petting and kind words. Follow the outside time with family time inside.

Using these puppy toilet training tips, it is important to understand that your puppy will not be completely house trained for several days or weeks.

Puppy Toilet Training Tip #5: Keep an eye on your little pup when he is inside. Be sure to watch for excessive sniffing or circling. These are the puppy’s signals to you that he must go to the bathroom. At this time, take the directly outside to the designated puppy place.

Puppy Toilet Training Tip #6: In the beginning days of using puppy potty training tips, be sure that you puppy is sleeping in his crate at night and while there is no one home. These are prime time frames for your puppy to make a mistake.

It is inevitable that while using these puppy toilet training tips, the puppy will have accidents. Be sure to not to discipline your puppy unless you catch him in the act. Be reminded that this puppy is like a child, and needs to be taught what is correct and where he should “go”.

Once the habit is formed for this cycle for the new puppy the puppy toilet training tips will become second nature, and accidents will be less and less.

Why You Should Crate Train Your Puppy

While there are those who claim that use of a crate to contain their dog is "cruel," these folks are unfortunately ill-informed about fundamental canine development and behaviors, not the least of which is the instinct to sleep in a den which is a characteristic of all dog breeds.
