Poochon Dog - Poochon Dog Breed Information
Poochon Dog Breed Profile
Description. The Poochon is a hybrid, or designer, dog, which was originally a cross between a pedigree Bichon Frise and a Pedigree Poodle. They are small dogs weighing in at around 10-15 pounds although this breed has already been bred down in size even further and there is a toy Poochon that is 6-9 pounds in weight. After the original breeding it is permissible to breed a Poochon with another Poochon or either of the original parent breeds. As the coat of both the original dogs is fairly similar in length you will get a coat that is not too long but could be anywhere between curly and fluffy. They come in a multitude of colors and as there are no laid down standards for hybrids you can just pick the one you fancy. You can not be certain of the look you will get until the puppies are born but as both parent breeds have some similarities it is fairly safe to think they will be carried down. The common characteristics are a rounded skull with quite long ears that will have a fringe on them. The muzzle will be quite long and will have a natural beard look, if left untrimmed.
History. The hybrids have only been around a short while, so have limited or no history as such. However the Poochon has reached such a level of popularity that it has been reduced in size and now comes as a toy dog as well. The hybrids have been bred to have characteristics that are conducive to modern living. Most designer dogs are small, light, and easily cared for. They are commonly based on Poodles or other high intelligence breeds, which normally makes training easier, and the Poodle is recognized as the easiest dog to train ever. In years to come the hybrids of today may be tomorrow’s pedigrees, after all they had to start somewhere. It is thought that in future the standards may be based more on temperament or abilities than looks, as the hybrids can have such a diversity of appearance for the same breed.
Temperament. These are quite active dogs being about mid way on a scale of sedentary to hyper. They are easy to train and have a quick intelligence that assists in the task. Although a small dog they are robust and surprisingly sturdy, with a reasonably muscular frame. They should be loving, faithful, and eager to please. Their energy levels are high and they do require physical and mental exercise, daily. They are playful and, as long as they are well socialized when young, they will play happily with other canines. They are of sporting dog stock and you should be wary of this dog with smaller household pets. It is vital to train your Poochon and assert yourself as pack leader or you will get behaviour issues. If not given adequate stimulation they can become snappy, over protective, and suffer small dog syndrome. Small dog syndrome is an issue with your treatment of the dog and is not a trait of any breed. A dog that knows their place in the family is a happy dog, a dog should never believe they are higher in the pack than a human as this causes the dog confusion.
Health issues. The Poochon has not been around long enough for any specific health issues too have been noted. It is however only sensible to check with the breeder for any health certificates and what may be expected from your puppy. Poodles are renowned for their health problems so ask for the parents certificates. The breeder should have no problem helping you. If they have a problem you should probably pick a different breeder.
Grooming. Grooming is liable to be a good brushing every couple of days and cutting every 4-8 weeks. Only bathe when necessary.
Living conditions. As an active dog they require exercise and a small yard or garden is preferred. If their needs are met they will happily live in an apartment. They prefer to be with their family and do not like being left outside alone, for too long.
