PERRO de PRESA CANARIO Dog Breed
Description. The Perro de Presa Canario is a large breed, of dogs. They stand 21-25 inches in height and weigh between 80 and 130 pounds. They are a powerful and muscular dog. Their head is only slightly longer than its width and is square in shape, with a broad muzzle. They have a broad and deep chest, leading down to raised hind quarters. They are dense boned, with powerful muscles and thick skin. Their head is very large, as is their jaw. The ears are normally cropped, in countries that allow the practice. The colours they come in are, a variety of shades of brindle, and fawn, there can also be some white markings.
History. The Perro de Presa Canario was first bred in the Canary Islands, in the 19th century. They were bred to be a fighting dog. It is thought the first dogs, of this breed, came from English mastiffs and the bardino majero, which is now extinct. Dogs were bred for their endurance and ferocity throughout Europe, as dog fighting was very popular. Most of Europe used to have dog fights in a ring but there were a few countries that the fights would take place in open fields. When dog fighting was made illegal the breed became less popular, and almost died out. In the 1960s the breed was on the edge of extinction, but an American vet took an interest and started breeding them, which saved the Perro de Presa Canario breed.
Temperament. It is vital that this dog respects their owner. As a large fighting dog, any behaviour issues would be a big problem. All members of the family must be respected, by them. A firm confident but fair person, with experience of dogs, is best to own this breed. They need to be well trained and know their place in the pecking order, of their family. This is not a breed for the weak leader. In the wrong hands the dog can become dangerous, but in the right hands can become an adorable pet with very protective instincts. They tend to like exercise in ‘the pack’ so it prefers to walk with at least a couple of the family. This dog must be made to walk behind the human holding their leash, or beside, as this shows your dominance in the pack. They make an excellent guard dog, most people would shy away at the mere sight of this breed, when they are growling or barking. Due to their size it is not a good idea to leave unsupervised with small children.
Health issues. As a large dog The Perro de Presa Canario can be prone to hip dysplasia. Otherwise there are few problems. With a life expectancy of 9-11 years they are generally healthy.
Grooming. They are an average shedder and routine grooming is quite simple. A brush with a firm bristled brush or comb is really all that is needed. Bath only when necessary, and consider dry shampoo.
Living conditions. They are fairly inactive when indoors and the Perro de Presa Canario will do fine living in an apartment. They will require at least a medium sized yard. This assumes they get sufficient exercise, walks and mental stimulation.
