Pekepoo Dog - Pekepoo Dog Breed Information
Pekepoo Dog Breed Profile
Description. The Pekepoo is a hybrid, or designer, dog and is also known as a Peekapoo. This is a cross between a pedigree Poodle and a pedigree Pekingese but can also be bred from other Pekepoos or any mix of the three. Certain characteristics will depend on which breed was the mother and which was the father. Another consideration is the size of Poodle used in the cross, as there are several sizes, although mainly the smaller breeds are used. You would normally expect the dog to be about 6-9 inches in height and weigh about 9-20 pounds. Poodles are used a lot in the hybrid dogs as they are low shedders and this makes the hybrids’ more allergy friendly, so people who would never have been able to have a dog before can look to these breeds. Until a uniform standard is introduced the dogs appearance can vary dependant on the percentages of the mix. It will be up to reputable breeders to try and establish a standard, one day, as the non reputable breeders are only in it for quick cash.
History. There is a very limited history to any of the designer breeds and the Pekepoo is no exception. Whilst the parent breeds have an extensive history this is not really relevant to today’s hybrids. In years gone by the breeds were classified by the tasks they were originally bred for but today dogs are rarely used as working dogs, with the vast majority being just pets. It is therefore not unreasonable to expect the hybrids of today to be classified and standards written for their abilities as companion dogs (pets). It is for certain that when the initial craze finishes and a sensible breeding program is introduced, everywhere, that at least some of these dogs will become the pedigrees of the future.
Temperament. The Peekapoo, or Pekepoo, is from a working history and although small is a robust and energetic dog. They require a fair amount of exercise daily and will require activities to exercise their mind as well. The dog has to be trained and treated as a dog, knowing their place in the household. If you fail to establish yourself as the pack leader you will have behaviour issues from this bundle of energy. They may be small but if they are bored and under exercised they will become wilful. You do not want this amount of energy channelled into destruction of your home. Proper socialization and training is vital. If this breed are treated as a human, especially a baby, they will become confused and small dog syndrome may set in. Small dog syndrome is caused by improper treatment by the owners and is not a characteristic of any dog breed. This breed does not do well with very small children as they take being teased personally.
Health issues. Poodles have quite extensive health issues but hopefully this breed will lean more towards the Pekingese. It is not yet possible to predict any problems with the Pekepoo but a reputable dealer will have the necessary health certificates and be able to provide advice on such matters. If the breeder can not help with this, then go to a better breeder.
Grooming. Grooming for a Pekepoo is likely to be frequent brushing with a cut every 4-8 weeks. It depends on the actual coat but the parent breeds suggest this will be the general requirement.
Living conditions. As the Peekapoo, or Pekepoo, is specifically bred for modern life they should do fine in an apartment but will require at least a small yard. Daily exercise is vital as is some playtime.
