Peek A Pom Dog - Peek A Pom Dog Breed Information
Peek A Pom Dog Breed Profile
Description. The Peek A Pom is a hybrid breed otherwise known as a designer dog. They are originally bred by crossing a purebred Pomeranian with a purebred Pekingese. As the breed moves on they could also be bred from two Peek-A-Poms or any mix of the original purebreds and the Peek-A-Pom. They are not to hard to describe as both parent breeds have similar traits. They are a small dog and will weigh between 4 and 10 pounds with a height of about 8-11 inches. They tend to have a body that is longer than the dog is high and the coat can vary, depending on which parent they take after. The head will be comparatively small and the ears will normally be folded down. They are quite a robust dog even though they look small and fragile. The muzzle will be fairly short and quite wide.
History. As a hybrid the Peek-A-Pom has a limited history. The parent breeds may go back many centuries and they have a good heritage. However the hybrids are dogs designed specifically for modern day owners and have been bred to accentuate certain qualities. To stand any chance of registration with kennel clubs the breed would have to be an improvement, in some way, on at least one of the parent breeds, or have some specific tendency that is desirable. With the history of present purebloods being based on the work they were used for, in the past, and the tendency for dogs to be pets rather than working dogs nowadays, the hybrids may come into their own just based on desirability as a pet. Because there is no present standard it is important to buy from a reputable breeder, who can tell you the exact breed mix.
Temperament. Whilst the Peek A Pom is a small dog you must remember it has a hunting heritage, through the parent breeds. They will be active, robust, and very curious with a high energy level. They are intelligent and will require mental stimulation. It is vital that this cute little thing is treated as a dog and properly trained, or behavior issues will ensue. Small dog syndrome is caused by inadequate training by the owners and is not a trait of any breed. You must ensure the dog sees you as the pack leader and you have to train the dog in a firm gentle consistent manner. Do not be harsh or rebuke the dog for any mistakes but reward heartily for a task well done. Treat training can be just making a fuss of the dog as food treats can cause weight and health issues. This dog will love to play and be into everything. They love being part of the family and when they know their place in the hierarchy will be very happy. It is vital not to treat a dog as a baby because this causes confusion and leads to problems for you and your pet.
Health issues. There are only limited parental health issues and the Peek A Pom should be a healthy overall breed. it is a good idea to check with the breeder about any health certifications etc. If they can not help you then go to a better breeder.
Grooming. This depends on the length of the coat but you should be prepared for a fair to extensive amount of grooming for the Peek-A-Pom.
Living conditions. As with most designer breeds the Peek A Pom is bred for today’s lifestyle and should adapt well to most environments including an apartment but they still need daily exercise and playtime. Just because they are small does not mean they do not like a walk. A lazy dog is a sad dog.
