PATTERDALE TERRIER Dog Breed
Description. The Patterdale Terrier is a small dog measuring some 12 inches in height and weighing between 11 and 13 pounds. Whilst being small they are quite stocky and muscular. They are powerful looking and strong, with the muzzle making up half of the head. The teeth meet in a scissor bite. Their eyes are far apart and set squarely in the skull. They have a black nose, apart from the liver coloured whose nose is red. There are strong forelegs that are straight and powerful. Their tail is often docked, in countries that allow this practice, to about one third of its original length or slightly less. Their coat is smooth and stiff, feeling harsh to the touch. They come in a variety of colours being grizzled, liver, bronze, red, black, and black and tan. The colours can be either solid or with some white about the feet and chest.
History. In years gone by, most North England villages used to have their own breeds, of terrier. Even when breeding standards were brought in by the kennel club, that reduced the numbers of different terriers, some areas still continued their own little breeds. The Patterdale terrier is one of these breeds. Most common in the Yorkshire area these dogs are rarely seen outside of England. They are named after a small Cumbrian village. They were originally used to hunt rabbits, fox, and rats. The Patterdale first appeared in the United States in 1978 where they are used to hunt raccoons fox badgers and wood chucks. They are extremely good at hunting and it has been known for a 13 pound Patterdale to successfully hunt and capture a 34 pound badger
Temperament. The Patterdale Terrier is a relaxed dog that is not yappy. They are a determined and clever breed; they are not for the fainthearted. This is a dog that really needs to know that the owners are in charge; their place in the family is to be established very early on. If this dog feels they are in charge there may be serious problems. This is an independent breed and they cannot be used to hunt in packs. As the Patterdale is a hunting dog they are not trustworthy were smaller pets, or any non-canines. They require quite a lot of exercise both physical and mental. It is essential that you are strong minded with this breed as they will sense any lack of confidence, you must say what you mean and mean what you say.
Health issues. There are a few health issues associated with this breed and the Patterdale terrier will live about 11-13 years.
Grooming. The Patterdale terrier requires hardly any grooming.
Living conditions. Patterdale Terriers enjoy working, and are quite active dogs. They require a lot of exercise for their size. Requiring mental stimulation they will enjoy ball games, chasing games, and above all else hunting. Although they are quite inactive indoors they are not suitable for apartment living. This is a dog that would suit an active family with older children.
