OLDE ENGLISH BULLDOGGE Dog Breed

Description. The Olde English Bulldogge male stands 17-20 inches in height with a weight of 60-80 pounds and the females standing 16-19 inches and weighing 50-70 pounds. They are strong dogs that are very muscular, maintaining good proportions with no exaggerated features. They have large cheeks that are well developed and a muscular powerful jaw. The Olde English Bulldogge have a well proportioned and large skull atop very defined shoulders. Their muzzle is approximately one third the total size of their head. Due to their heavy muscular chest their front legs are slightly further apart than their rear legs. They come in a variety of colors being black, red, fawn, or grey. These colors can be solid or with some white patches.

History. The Olde English Bulldogge is a very new breed and quite rare. They were first developed by crossing British Bulldog, American Bulldog, pit bull, and the bull mastiff. The main reason behind breeding this particular dog was to have a bulldog with the traits of English bulldog that did not suffer the breathing problems and other health issues that the English bulldog is prone to. It was also hoped in the breeding of this dog to ease its domineering tendency, to produce an easier pet that was more family orientated..

Temperament. The Olde English Bulldogge breed is courageous, bold, and determined but is also quite docile. They are quite fearless and protective and are more than happy to defend their master against any adversary. The Olde English Bulldogge is an avid chewer, and will need toys etc that they can chew on. Due to their strength and the power of their jaws great thought will have to be put into the chew toys provided. Nowadays there are specialist brands specifically designed for the strong jawed dogs. Some care must be taken with these dogs, as they are so eager to please they may over exert themselves. Training is obviously very important, as it is with all dogs, you’ll need to ensure that you are seen as their leader. A firm but gentle approach will work well with this dog. In the family home it is important to ensure the dog sees all humans as superiors. An Olde English Bulldogge will require regular exercise but does not require an excessive amount, a good but reasonable length walk every day will suffice. They can survive with only light exercise but it is better to go a little bit further and avoid boredom.

Health issues. They do have a susceptibility to bloat so portion control over their feeding is quite important. It is better to give them three or four small meals a day rather than one or two large ones. You should also avoid exercise within half an hour of eating. Hip dysplasia can occur. Although all adults, for breeding purposes, are x-rayed and any animal showing hip problems is not used for breeding. With a life expectancy of the 11 years or so the Olde English Bulldogge is generally healthy.

Grooming. The Olde English Bulldogge is an average shedder that requires very little grooming.

Living conditions. This breed can adapt to almost any style of living although extremes of temperature need to be avoided.
