Ogar Polski Dog - Ogar Polski Dog Breed Information
Ogar Polski Dog Breed Profile
Description. The Ogar Polski is a medium-large dog standing around 24-26 inches and weighing between 66 and 77 pounds for the male dog with the female bitch being a little smaller at 22-24 inches and a weight of 44-57 pounds. As with many Polish breeds the Ogar Polski is rare outside of Poland. The male dog is much heavier set than the female and displays a more muscular look. The coat is short and smooth to the touch also being very dense. The most common colors are black or tan, or a mixture of the two. They have a large head with the muzzle taking up just under half of its overall size. The ears are large and hang to the side of the head. Their neck is thick and solid leading to their deep chest and heavy strong shoulders above their straight legs. The length of the body is similar to the height and they have a long medium set tail that tapers towards the end and reaches approximately to the heal.
History. The Ogar Polski is also known as the Polish hound and is famous for being the first hero of a dog related work, this being Myslistwo z ogary written by Jan Ostrorog in 1616, translated it means hunting with hound dogs. This book referred to the abilities and habits of the dog but did not refer at all to the look or general specifications of the breed. After WWII the breed was nearing its demise until two people decided to resurrect the breed. Having succeeded the dogs are now in two breeds, in Poland, but are both referred to as The Polish hound in other countries. The Polish names are Gonczy Polski and Ogar Polski. The breed standard was registered with the FCI in 1966.
Temperament. This is a trailing dog. On the hunt; they will chase a scent for an incredible amount of time and seem almost inexhaustible. They have been used for the hunting of wild boar but this quite unusual. This should give you a clue as to the amount of exercise the Ogar Polski requires. However they are a patient and happy dog with a great deal of affection for their family. They are not safe to leave unattended with smaller household pets until you are sure of them but as long as they are socialized young they will be ok with other household pets. They make an excellent watchdog as anybody coming near will set of a volley of barking. However they are not good as a guard dog as they are only shouting out to get a fuss, they love everyone. You need to establish yourself well with this breed, as an inadequately trained dog of this size is not a good idea.
Health issues. As this dog is quite rare and very much so outside of Poland there is little information about health issues or the Ogar Polskis’ longevity.
Grooming. This is a short haired breed and occasional brushing should suffice.
Living conditions. As a large hunting dog the Ogar Polski requires space and activity they will not do well in an apartment and need at least a large garden but would prefer at least a semi rural or country setting.
