NORWEGIAN LUNDEHUND Dog Breed

Description. The Norwegian Lundehund is a small dog measuring 12 to 15 ½ inches in height with a weight of between 13 and 20 pounds. It is of the spitz dog variety but has some interesting differences from all other breeds. These dogs’ feet have six toes, which includes two dew claws. It also has joints in the neck around the nape area. Their shoulder joints have an extreme flexibility, and the ears are more mobile than in most other dogs. Their deep-set eyes are brown in colour. The Norwegian Lundehund have a wedge shaped and small head. The rear of the dog is moderately muscled, which gives the dog greater agility, although a little less speed. Their tail is carried slightly rolled, hanging, or in a ring-shape. They have a rough, dense, and short coat that lies flat against the body. The Norwegian Lundehund come in several colours being fallow to reddish-brown, dark markings on a white coat, grey, or black. Apart from the white coated they all have white markings.

History. The Norwegian Lundehund is amongst the rarest breeds in the world its origins are from northern Norway and is a member of the spitz family. For many centuries the breed were used for puffin hunting, climbing the steep cliffs to get to the puffin’s nests. In the 19th century, the hunting of puffins was stopped due to them becoming a protected species. This resulted in the number of Norwegian Lundehunds declining dramatically; as they were no longer of much use to the farmers. After the Second World War two concerned Norwegians set about saving the breed from extinction. The Norwegian Lundehund was first recognized as a separate breed in 1943, and the AKC first recognized this breed in 2008.

Temperament. This is a loving and very friendly dog, and enjoys being around people. The Norwegian Lundehund is not an aggressive dog and is quite happy to sit and be cuddled for hours. They are very curious and love to explore. They are an intelligent breed and require mental stimulation. They do suffer difficulty with housebreaking, potty training, and there is a possibility they will never be totally housetrained. Socialising this dog is very important, from an earlier age, especially with members of the household. As with many dogs they require a firm gentle owner and consistent rules. Kindness is always the best training aid however the dog must be aware you mean what you say. Do not chastise the dog if they are doing something wrong but praise very heavily when the task is successful.

Health issues. The Norwegian Lundehund Does suffer some significant health issues; they are prone to digestive problems and leaky gut syndrome. It is vital these dogs are fed correctly to reduce the incidence of these problems. They should avoid grain foods at all costs. Apart from that they are a generally healthy dog and live approximately 12 years.

Grooming. The breed is a heavy shedder. However, general grooming is, quite simply, a regular brush or comb with a firm bristled brush, now and then is all that is required. Bath or dry shampoo only when necessary.

Living conditions. The Norwegian Lundehund is not really suited to apartment life and does best in a house with at least a small yard or garden.
