Mudi Dog - Mudi Dog Breed Information
Mudi Dog Breed Profile
Description. The Mudi is a medium sized dog standing 14-20 inches in height and weighing 18-29 pounds. Their convex skull has a well defined stop. They have a head that is of a wedge shape with the nose being pointed. The strong muscular jaws meet in a scissor action. With eyes that are oval in shape and brown in color. Their triangular shaped ears stand erect and vigilant. Their fairly average neck leads down to a deep chest with well defined muscles at the shoulders. The back is quite straight and the body is longer than the dogs’ height. It is known for this breed to be born with no tail sometimes. The coat of a mudi is about two inches in length and can come in several different colors which include brown, black, red, white, and fallow.
History. In times gone by the Hungarian herding and flock guarding dogs were all classed as one group. In the 1930s these were separated into their own breeds, which were the Pumi, the Puli, and the Mudi. The Mudi has only been around for about a century and is more of a natural dog, rather than a deliberate breeding. The original standards were drawn up from observing the dogs and writing their traits from that observation. Due to other breeds being more popular, namely the Komodor and the Puli, the Mudi is a rare breed, even in Hungary. Its main popularity was due to its diverse range of skills and they have been used successfully as heard dogs, guard & watchdogs, hunt dogs, companions, and for killing small vermin. It has even been used for search and rescue in Finland. The Mudi often works without human supervision and it is only due to the dedication of a small group of breeders that this dog is not extinct.
Temperament. This breed is highly intelligent, a quick learner, very trainable, courageous, and very powerful. They can be taught very quickly and they are almost without fear. They will face down a wild bore or a wolf. They are of a happy disposition and make an excellent companion dog. The Mudi is faithful and loving of its family but normally bonds with one person above the rest. As with all dogs you need to be the pack leader and the dog needs to know their place in the family. Socializing as young as possible helps this dog but they are still often wary of strangers. If the dog is properly trained and exercised they will be good with any member of the family, even young children, but they do not like being teased.
Health issues. A Mudi can suffer hip dysplasia, but even this is rare. With a life expectancy of 13-14 years they are a healthy breed.
Grooming. Whilst the Mudi is an average shedder, occasional brushing is the only grooming they require.
Living conditions. A Mudi can live outdoors if enough shelter is available; however they prefer to live with the family. They can live in an apartment if they have enough exercise but they prefer a large open space. They would require at least a large yard or garden.
