Morkie Dog Breed

Common Name and Nicknames: This wonderful breed is commonly known by the following names: Morkie, Yorktese, Yorkie Maltese mix, Maltese Yorkie mix.

Description: The Morkie is a Toy Breed. Morkie Puppies are known for their playful and sweet natured temperament.

The Morkie can be very small. The Teacup Morkie is not an accepted term with AKC. The term "TEACUP" is merely an adjective to describe a smaller than standard size of the Morkie designer breed. The standard size is up to 7-8 lbs. The Teacup Morkie is usually in the 3 to 4 lb or less weight range as an adult. Again this is simply a term used to describe a Morkie that has been bred to be smaller than standard size. This happens when both Mom and Dad are smaller than standard size. Preferably Mom being in the 4 to 5 lb weight range and Dad being 3 lbs or less. Make sure you ask questions when talking to the Morkie breeder.

The Morkie is probably the most popular of all the designer mix breeds. The Morkie breed is known for it's different color coats. Some of the colors that they can have are as follows: The most common is the blue/black and tan. The next color is probably my favorite and it is the Golden Color. The Golden Morkie can come in different colors, like gold and white or solid gold with lighter highlights. More colors are Black, Black and White and Black/Blue, Gold and White. The rarest colors are Gold, Black and then Blue.

Many owners allow their Morkie coat to grown long and to the ground. This is possible because both the Yorkie and Maltese are non-shedding and have the possibility of their coats growing all the way to the floor. This does take some work and you will need to brush your Morkie at least every two to three days and more often if they get dirty. There are probably more owners that give their Morkie a puppy cut instead of going thru all the work of keeping the coat brushed and free of tangles. I don't really have a preference when it comes to the Morkie breed. The puppy cut or hair cut for your Morkie will make it easier on you but it's hard to beat the beauty of how a Morkie looks with the long coat that reaches to the floor.

Temperament:

The temperament or personality of your Morkie will depend on a variety of factors. Their are two factors that I consider to be the most important when it comes to the Morkie breed.

The number one most important factor in my opinion is the temperament or personality of both parents. Both Mom and Dad need to be sweet natured with no bad personalities in their backgrounds either.

The number two most important factor is socialization of the Morkie puppies. This begins at birth and continues until the Morkie puppy goes to it's new home. Each of the puppies need to be well socialized with children and adults alike. I consider both of these factors to be equally important.

The adult weight of the Morkie tends to be in the 3 to 8 lb weight range. There is not a height established for this breed but well bred Morkies will be short and compact.

The Morkie breed can live in many different environments. If you live in a hotter climate I suggest you get your Morkie a puppy cut, especially if they spend a lot of time outside in the sun. They will be much more comfortable. If you live in a colder climate then you should invest in a Coat or Sweater for your Morkie. Most Morkies will be comfortable in an apartment, condo, house or country setting.

Exercise: It is important to give your Morkie puppies proper exercise. If you have a fenced in yard you can let your Morkie run loose but I suggest you be out there with it to make sure they don't find a place to get out. Most Morkie puppies can get enough exercise just playing and running in your apartment or house but every dog that I've known loves to play outside. Most Morkies don't mind getting dirty either. They will play in the dirt, grass and leaves with the best of them.

Life Expectancy: The life expectancy of Morkies are 12-15 years or more. It is important to make sure your puppy is up to date on all it's vaccinations, de-wormings.

If the only phone number they give you is a cell phone then please be careful. I don't know about you but if I'm spending $1,000.00 or more on a Morkie puppy then I expect to be able to get in touch with the breeder.
