Maltipoo Dog Breed

Common Name: This beautiful designer dog breed is known by the name Maltipoo, Maltapoo, Maltepoo, Moodle and Malti-Doodle

Origin: The Maltipoo is a designer breed that comes from full blood Maltese and Poodle Parents.

History: The Maltipoo has been around about as long as the Maltese and Poodle breeds. Of course the first Maltipoos probably came about by accident but within the last 10 years the Maltipoo has become one of the most popular designer breeds.

Description: The Maltipoo can come in a wide variety of colors and color combinations. The Maltipoo colors come from the Poodle. Some Maltipoos are parti colored, others solid. Some of the common colors of the Maltipoo are White, Cream, Apricot, Silver, Gray, Black, Black and White, White and Cream, Apricot and Cream and to many more to mention.

The Maltipoo is non-shedding since both the Maltese and Poodle are considered non-shedding dog breeds. The Maltipoo coat can be either curly like the Poodle or Wavy like the Maltese. The Maltipoo is not an accepted dog breed with AKC.

Maltipoo Puppies can be very tiny. The term "TEACUP" is merely an adjective to describe a smaller than standard size of this designer breed. The standard size is up to 7-8 lbs. The Teacup Maltipoo dog is usually in the 3 to 4 lb or less weight range as an adult. Again this is simply a term used to describe a Maltipoo that has been bred to be smaller than standard size. This happens when both Mom and Dad are smaller than standard size. Preferably Mom being in the 4 to 5 lb weight range and Dad being 3 lbs or less. Make sure you ask questions when talking to the Maltipoo breeder.

Temperament:

The temperament or personality of your Maltipoo dog will depend on a variety of factors. Their are two factors that I consider to be the most important when it comes to the Maltipoo breed.  

# 1 Both Parents of the Maltipoo puppy need to be sweet natured and well socialized.

# 2 Each Maltipoo puppy in the litter needs to be introduced to family members at an early age, including children and adults. Proper socialization of the Maltipoo puppies is equally important.

Maltipoo Puppies are generally intelligent. The Poodle is considered one of the most intelligent breeds and the Maltese are smart also. That doesn't mean they will be easy to train, only that they are trainable if done properly.

Maltipoo puppies and dogs can live in many different environments. If you live in a hotter climate I suggest you get your Maltipoo a hair-cut, preferably a puppy cut, especially if they spend a lot of time outside in the sun. They will be much more comfortable. If you live in a colder climate then you should invest in a Coat or Sweater for your Maltese dog or puppy. The Maltipoo will be comfortable in an apartment, condo, house or country setting.

Exercise: It is important to give your Maltipoo puppy or adult dog proper exercise. If you have a fenced in yard you can let your Maltipoo run loose but I suggest you be out there with it to make sure they don't find a place to get out. Most Maltipoo dogs can get enough exercise just playing and running in your apartment or house but every Maltipoo puppy and dog that I've known loves to play outside.

This dog breed makes a good pet for a family or individual in a city or suburban home. It does well in an apartment. This Maltipoo is very trusting and gentle with friends and family, including children but is somewhat wary of strangers. It is very affectionate, loves to give kisses and cuddle. The Maltipoo makes an excellent lap dog.

Life Expectancy: The life expectancy of a Maltipoo is 12-17 years or more. It is important to make sure your Maltipoo puppy is up to date on all it's vaccinations, de-wormings. If your Maltipoo puppy is over 12 weeks of age it will need a rabies vaccination before flying.
