Maltipom Dog - Malti Pom Dog Breed Information
Malti Pom Dog Breed Profile
Description: The Malti-Pom is a designer dog that is a cross of the Maltese and the Pomeranian breeds; they are also called the Pomanees. The mix of these breeds has resulted in an array of colors and so you are sure to find a coat color that suits you. The weight range is about 6-9 pounds. There is no clear standard and so it is best that you like both breeds used to get this dog as you may get a mixed looking dog. Some things are set such as the nose is always big with wide nostrils. The lips and eye rims are normally black. Some have smaller muzzles like the Pomeranian while others have a longer muzzle like the Maltese. The ears tend to follow the Pomeranian and have very long hair on the ears, these hang downward but are set high on the head. The eyes are round and these are normally dark in color. The coat is like a human’s hair and keeps growing. The base color tends to be white but you get a little color in the form of patches of another color such as a white dog with soft light tan patches.
History: The Malti-Pom has a great history in its parentage line and they are now making their own history. This is proving to be a popular dog as this dog fits into the needs of a lot of today’s families. They have gained a fan base and this is one of the dogs that are able to be registered and recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club. This is a new organization that is trying to set standards and keep records of new breeds.
Temperament: This is an intelligent dog and they love to amuse you. Here is a dog that fits in well to a family with older children and it has to be said they do not like very young children. They train easily and will want to please you. Training needs to be firm and consistent but fun, harsh methods do not work. Socialize them well from very young as this will help them in any new situations and also reduce the chance of shyness and timidity that can be in this breed. They are not a dog that takes to being bored and if they get bored they can become barkers. There is a tendency to “baby” this dog as it loves all the affection you can give it but a balance has to be gained and setting house rules and giving boundaries is important. Without these rules and training this breed can get small dog syndrome and this is where the dog is thinking they are the boss but this is not a happy place for the dog, so snappy and barking dogs are the result. They can become over protective of the owner as well. With the right balance this does not happen and you have a dog that will give much joy and love.
Health issues: It is important to only get this dog from a breeder that has full understanding of both dogs and can show you all health certificates so you know that you are getting a dog with the best start in life. If they can not do this walk away as the dogs used for breeding could have a number of problems later on in the life of your pet. Read up on both parent dogs health as this is important for you to have an understanding.
Grooming: This dog has got high grooming needs. You will need to groom daily and also take the dog to a groomer once a month for cuts.
Living conditions: The Malti-Pom is happy in an apartment; they do need walks, every day, and mental exercise. They only need a small garden with good fencing.
