Lhasapoo Dog Breed Description, History, Health Issues, Temperament, Grooming, Colors, Size and More

Lhasapoo Dog Breed Profile

Description: This is a hybrid dog that is a cross between the Poodle and the Lhasa Apso. The Lhasapoo is a small breed of dog that has a round head and short muzzle.

The eyes are wide set and round these are dark in color. The nose is large and normally black in color. The ears are much feathered and hang downwards to under the cheeks. The body and the head are in good proportion and are strong.

The weight varies and is from 12-16 pounds with the height of 9-13 inches. The legs are short but strong and straight. The coat is lavish and medium in length.

This can be curly or wavy and some pups have a nearly straight coat. Colors that are seen are browns, whites white with light apricot markings, black and a host of other colors. Life expectancy is not yet known.

History: The Lhasapoo is a new dog that has not much in its history as yet. They have been designed to give a new generation of dog to people that are just wanting a low allergy dog that requires less exercise, a dog for more modern times. The Lhasapoo was first seen in America. As with all new breed the standards are not set and the problems of modern life is that the “breeders” that get on board just want the money and have no wish to stabilize the health and the temperament. Only get a pup from a breeder that has good experience and knows what they are doing. They should have good health certificates for the breeding pair and explain some health issues that they can not protect the pup from and well recorder blood lines. If they do not have this then walk away and find a breeder that does in this way you are more likely to get a pup that is healthy and also a dog that has the desired fetchers you need.

Temperament: While this is a small dog that is very cute, and will want to cuddle you all day, in the long run it is best to remember this is a dog and needs to be a dog. There is a time and place for a good cuddle but this is a dog and to stop small dog syndrome, it is best to set house rules and boundaries for this dog. Rules can be “no begging to food tips”, not being in the kitchen when you are cooking, in this way the dog doesn’t get under your feet and get hurt, or not being allowed in the bedrooms, the rules that you choose are up to you but all dogs need to know what is not acceptable and this gives the Lhasapoo grounding and they are happier for it. Without rules they can become very demanding, snappy and over protective. While normally this is a good dog with children ,without boundaries they can snap. All these problems are made by the dog not being a dog and getting the dog into a worried state of mind. If you are a calm fair pack leader that has rules and keeps to them the dog will never get like this. Here is a bright dog that can train well and it is best to used positive training as harsh training or shouting will not work for these sensitive dogs. They do not need hours of exercise and long walks but short walks daily help the dog’s natural instincts. The Lhasapoo love to play and so a lot of the energy is used up in this activity. They will want to please you and love to be with their family. They can be timid and this can be helped by socializing them well from early puppy hood. They are a dog not to be left in a garden and are an indoor breed. They are good with other pets but it can be best to raise them together.

Health issues: Both breeds used to gain the Lhasapoo have health concerns so it is always best to get a dog from a breeder that knows both breeds well and has health certificates for the breeding pair. They should be able to tell you about any health issues and have good blood lines. Without this, walk away as you may have a puppy that will need a lot of health care later in life.

Grooming: The Lhasapoo has a lovely coat that is luxurious and can be low maintenance but to keep the coat looking lovely it is best to brush the coat through daily.

Living conditions: The Lhasapoo can live in an apartment with no problems providing they have a walk daily and you have time to play with your dog and give them the company that they need. A small garden will be nice for this dog.
