Their broad mouth has a scissor bite. Their coat color is almost invariably white with black patches (and a lot of them); other colors occur but are not desirable for show purposes.
They are deep chested with straight front legs, which are muscular at the shoulder, and well muscled back legs. The male dogs tend to have longer feathering and longer chest hair than the bitches. Their tail is carried straight and is sometimes docked, in countries that allow it, by a small amount.
History. Towards the end of the 1700s’ Germans were almost fanatic about hunting dogs, for birds. The breed originated in Munster and was bred from a smaller dog. They wanted the attributes of the small Munsterander but with a larger size. The small Munsterander is descended from longhaired pointers. It was unusual for the time, as most hunters liked, and were used to, brown colored dogs. The breed did take off, as a result of their excellent scent abilities. There are a lot of people who just say this breed is nothing more than a black and white pointer. They have since proved their abilities on land and in water with a great deal of reliability. With its background it has been hailed a good all rounder as it can point game, is a reliable retriever, and can perform many other general utilitarian tasks.
Temperament. This is an intelligent breed that is readily trained and is cheerful and courageous. They make a marvelous companion dog and they are a pleasure to be with. They do require firm, fair, gentle training from a confident owner. They are very friendly, to such an extent that, they are of little use as a guard or watchdog. They also require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, without which they can become bored and destructive. They are loving members of the family and like to know their place. They are very good with children and love to play, especially fetch, catch, and hiding games (which exercise their natural instincts). They are not good with smaller pets, or birds.
Health issues. Hip dysplasia can occur, but is not common. With a life expectancy of 12-13 years the Large Munsterander is a healthy breed.
Grooming. The female Large Munsterander has shorter hair and needs brushing about twice a week whereas the male needs brushing every other day. They are seasonal shedders and may require stripping during these periods.
Living conditions. These are active dogs that like to play, a lot, and are not suited to life in an apartment. The Large Munsterander requires space and will need at least a large garden or yard. They are happiest in semi rural to country locations.
