History: The Labradoodle has come from Australia where a man called Don Evens helped to create this breed for the Guide Dog Association, as there was a real need to have guide dogs that were good for allergy suffers. From the first litter of eight pups there where three that had the low allergy coats that they where looking for. In some ways disaster struck in Australia as suddenly the Labradoodle went to high demand by the public and lots of so called “breeders “ climbed aboard the demand and started to breed any Poodle and Labrador to gain money with no thought to blood lines or temperament and this has created a very unstable breeding program. The same thing has happened in America and it is best to only get a dog from a breeder that has very good knowledge of both breeds used and health certificates, with good understanding of the likely temperament of the dogs they breed or you could be in for a lot of vet bills and a dog that has bad health and or is not of good temperament.
Temperament: As stated in the history of the breed you rally have to use a good breeder or the dog may not be what you are led to believe. Temperament is part genetic and part how the dog is treated if you get a dog that has not been bred for temperament they can be willful and head strong very easy to be distracted and difficult to train. If you get a dog from a good breeder then you will know that the dog is bred for the coat and the temperament, remember that not all Labradoodles have a low allergy coat. When the breeding is done right you have a dog that is almost connected to your thoughts and is a joy to train. They are bright and keen to learn. They love the family and will seem to melt at the touch of your hand. They can be high energy so need plenty of exercise both physical and mental. Due to their wonderful natures they are good with children and other dogs and pets and can be used as a therapy dog. Here are dogs’ that love agility and or obedience and are very good at both. This is a wonderful dog that needs a firm but gentle owner that can give good daily walks and training and set house rules and boundaries for this bouncy dog that is a great family pet.
Health issues: The Labradoodle can inherit many health issues and it is always best to go to a good breeder that has full health certificates and can talk to you about any health issues, honestly. If not, walk away as both lines, if not well checked, have many problems. The allergy side needs a mention here not for the dog but for the human it really needs good understanding of what you are doing as with the first generation not all pups are low allergy and some have even been known to be fine and low allergy till about eight months and then the coat can change and you have a dog that has no low allergy coat. Only get from a breeder that really knows what you need and can provide the right pup for you.
Grooming: Seek help with the whole grooming needs of this breed as so much will depend on the coat type and the age of the dog. There is fairly low coat care and then there is high coat care so know what you are prepared to do. All dogs need some coat care and at the least your dog will need weekly brushing and the coat will need cutting at least twice a year.
Living conditions: The Labradoodle can live in an apartment and providing that their needs are met with daily walks and mental exercise they are happy. They need a garden and the size will depend on what size dog you get.
