Description: The Japanese Terrier as the name says comes from Japan and it is a Terrier that is small and square in shape. Most commonly the head is black and the body is mostly white with a few black spots. The size is 8-13 inches and the weight is 5-9 pounds. The Japanese Terrier head is small and sits on a wide muscular neck. The eyes are oval and set wide the nose is always black and the muzzle is short but in good proportion to the body. The ears are set high and these are pricked with the top folded over forward facing. The Japanese Terrier tail is set high and when the dog is interested is set straight up. In some countries, that permit docking, the tail is docked. The coat is very short and this allows the muscular framing to be seen clearly.

History: The Japanese Terrier breeding only started in 1920’s. This breed is not known much outside of Japan and they were recognized by the Japanese Kennel Club in 1930.It is thought that this breed came to Japan with the Dutch merchants and is thought to be descended from the Dutch Terrier. The biggest difference with this dog is that it has been a pet dog rather than a working dog like so many of the Terrier family. They have been a lap dog in the port of Nagasaki. The planned breeding did not start until 1920 when fanciers started to breed selectively.

Temperament: The Japanese Terrier has always been a pet dog in Japan and as such they are of a cheerful nature. They are quick and lively and good company. This dog needs to have good basic training. This along with house rules makes this a good dog for the family. They are still high in energy and need good walks daily. They are loyal and become attached to the owner above all others. If that person is threatened then this dog can become aggressive but on the whole they are not an aggressive dog. Training and day to day dealings with this dog need to be calm with an air of natural authority. Feeding and trust go together for this dog and if there is a problem for one member of the family if they take on the role of feeding this dog, then any worries can diminish. This dog loves to be the centre of attention but it is important that they are not allowed to feel they are the boss and that all humans in the family are above them in rank. This is a dog that will love to jog or run with you daily and this will help burn up some of the energy that this dog has.

Health issues: This dog has no health issues and is of good general health. They do need to be kept away from smokers as this seems to set off breathing disorders.

Grooming: The Japanese Terrier has very low grooming needs. They do need to have bathes to keep the coat and skin clean.

Living conditions: The Japanese Terrier can live in an apartment if they have the right amount of exercise daily. They need a small to medium garden with good fencing and do require outside activities daily.
