Jackabee Dog Breed Description, History, Temperament, Health Issues, Grooming, Colors, Size and More
Overall the Jackabee tends, in look, to follow the Jack Russell Terrier. The body and the face is more Beagle but this is not always the case. The weight is 12-25 pounds. They have brown eyes and hanging downward ears. The body is medium in build but hindquarters are muscular and strong. The tail is long and set high. The coat is single layered and this can be thin, smooth or hard and will depend on the dog used for breeding. The colors are cream with tan spots, white with beige patches or tri colored this is white, tan and brown.
History: the Jackabee is new and so the history has just started. There is no standard and only time will tell if this dog is here for the long run or if this dog is just a fashion craze. If this is a dog for the future some standards will need to be set and as the standards of old tend to be about look or working abilities whereas in the new breeds they have moved on to temperament and ease of care. Only time will tell which way the future will unfold.
Temperament: There are problems in the temperament of this breed but as it is new these could be bred out. These are that the Jackabee can be very shy and due to fear be aggressive so socializing this breed is very important from a young age to help them be confident in their lives. They need an owner that will train the dog in basic obedience but this dog is harder to train than some due to the fact they get distracted easily, so short lessons a few times a day work better than long sessions where they tend to switch off. Training needs to be fun and give fast rewards for training well done. Remember the training needs to be done a few times a day, every day. Harsh training doesn’t work for this breed but quick fun and rewarded sessions work better. Set house rules and boundaries to help the dog know their place in the family, this gives them security.
The Jackabee is a dog with energy and lots of it so walking daily or jogging this dog is a must. If they do not burn off the energy then you have a dog that has problems, such as chewing and or obsessively barking with the odd Jackabee having the bay of the Beagle. Have chew toys that are for chewing and do not accept anything else being chewed. This is a rule that needs to be in the house rules for this dog. No feeding at the table, is another rule that not only teaches the dog manners but helps their health as they can put on weight.
No jumping in the house is another rule that again helps the dog and you will find that any guests are happier as well. While out walking it is best to keep the dog on a lead as they are big scent smellers and can be off on a scent and not be thinking about anything else. They do make good companion dogs and they are good with older children and will love to be with the owner but it is best to plan not to have other non canine pets as the hunting instinct is still there. They can bark loudly and some training needs to be done here if this is a problem.
Health issues: The Jackabee has good health to date but it is early days of this breed and a good breeder will be able to show you health certificates’ for the breeding dogs, if not walk away and find a breeder that can.
Grooming: This is fairly easy for the Jackabee and they need brushing weekly to remove any dead hair.
Living conditions: This is an active dog and if you can meet the needs of daily walking and mental exercise they can live in an apartment. The garden needs to be well fenced as this dog can jump high; it needs to be medium in size.
