GREYHOUND Dog Breed History, Health Issues, Grooming, Colors, Sizes, Temperament and More
History. The Greyhound has a long history, dating as far back as 2900BC where carvings of them have been found in Egyptian tombs. It is thought that these Egyptian dogs are the ancestors to today's Greyhounds; they were then gifted to Roman and Greek nobility spreading the breed across the entire Roman Empire. They were later introduced to England in the 6th century where they were used for hunting and for sport. In 1014 the laws prohibited anybody but the British nobility from keeping Greyhounds, this law was revoked 400 years later. The Greyhound are one of the fastest animals on Earth, running at speeds up to 45mph, and have been used as racing dogs for this reason, this is still a practice that continues among greyhounds and racing lines today are bred to be as fast as possible.
Temperament. Greyhounds are loving and charming with a very laid-back nature. They are intelligent, devoted, and brave. People do not necessarily see these traits in the Greyhound, due to the dogs reserved nature around strangers. They are sensitive to the voice tone used and do not take well to harsh behavior. They require a firm and gentle hand in their training, to get on well. They must be trained to leave cats and other small pets alone. Failure to do this may result in the loss of other household pets, as the Greyhound is driven by hunting instinct. Unless you can train your dog to not chase other animals it must be kept on a leash whilst walking. As a Greyhound can run at great speed, you will not be able to catch it before it catches its prey. Greyhounds bond very well with their owners who have tremendous stamina to require a great deal of walking and other exercise. They tend not to bark much and with adequate exercise and training make loving pets.
Health Issues. Greyhounds can be prone to bloat. The easy way to reduce the incidence of this is deceived in two to three small meals a day rather than one large one also to avoid exercise half an hour either side of eating. They have a predisposition towards hypothyroidism and are sensitive to drugs. Other than these items the breed are generally healthy with a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
Grooming. The grooming of a greyhound is very easy due to their short coat a simple comb or brushing is all that is needed. They are considered an average shedder.
Living Conditions. As long as their exercise requirements are met a Greyhound can live in an apartment but they will require at least a small yard, that is secure so they cannot chase neighbors pets.
