GOLDEN RETRIEVER Dog Breed Information

Description: The golden Retriever is a sturdy, muscular, and athletic dog first developed to be used for hunting. The dog should be between 22 and 24 at the withers and weigh 65 to 75 pounds. The height of the bitch should be 20 to 22 and weigh 55 to 65 pounds.

The coat of the Golden Retriever can be either wavy or straight and is of medium length. There is an undercoat and, like the outer coat, it is water resistant. The coat color ranges through different shades of golden, from very light to dark.

History: Lord Tweedmouth is primarily responsible for developing the Golden Retriever breed. He wanted to breed dogs that would be capable of hunting in the rugged Scottish countryside. As the weather in Scotland is often inclement, he wanted a dog that would not be hampered by extreme conditions. While Lord Tweedmouth wanted a dog that would be even more durable and vigorous than those available, he wanted to be sure that the new breed would be easily trained and have a good disposition. To begin with, he bred two dogs, the “Yellow Retriever” and the extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Crossing the offspring with the Bloodhound, Irish Setter, and Tweed Water Spaniel again resulted in the Golden Retriever.

Temperament: The Golden Retriever is not only renowned for its intelligence and trainability, but also for its extreme good nature. The Golden Retriever is not a dog that attaches itself to one person, they tend to be friendly and companionable with almost everyone. These dogs are very good with children, although it is sometimes said that the Golden Retriever needs to be protected from its young human friends. The ease of training and wonderful disposition of the dog makes it an excellent guide or helper dog for handicapped people.

Health Issues: As with most large breeds of dog, the Golden Retriever is prone to hip dysplasia. The Golden Retriever can also be a victim of Von Willebrand’s Disease (a kind of hemophilia), as well as cancer and heart disease. This dog also has a sensitive skin and is subject to skin irritations and allergies. Quite a few eye problems, such as entropion, glaucoma, and cataracts can occur. The dog loves to eat, so it is important to watch its diet to maintain a proper weight.

Grooming: The medium-length coat of the Golden Retriever is easy to care for. A daily brushing will help control shedding, which occurs all year. The heaviest shed comes in the spring. The owner can also use a dry shampoo on the dog when desired. It is best not to bathe the dog unless absolutely necessary.

Living Conditions: The Golden Retriever is able to live outside, but should not be left outdoor during the winter, unless living in a warmer climate. The dog will be happy in an apartment as long as it receives adequate exercise. The best way to prevent undesirable behavior in your Golden Retriever is to make sure the dog has a long run or walk every day.
