German Spitz Dog Breed History, Colors, Size, Temperament, Grooming, Health Issues and More
German Spitz Dog Breed Profile
History: The German Spitz is the oldest breed of dog in Central Europe and has been referred to in antiquities from the Stone Age. This dog was brought to America and due to the bad feelings and the Anti- German prejudices from World War I the name was changed to be the American Eskimo Dog. In this history of the German Spitz it is thought that this is one of the first dogs bred for the coat color white by non- nomadic people and also to have its hunting instinct bred out. Before 1871 Germany was made up of small kingdoms and this is were the different Spitz came about, as each kingdom had its own ideas. The dog has been used as a coachman’s Spitz running or riding on the horses backs and would warn of strangers coming in the night. With the World Wars the breed suffered a decline, in the UK as well and it is only making a good comeback from the late 1990’s to date.
Temperament: The German Spitz is a bright intelligent dog that can be noisy. Here is a breed that can be independent and they do not like to be ignored. Training needs to be done to help assert your leadership and should be based on fun and treats as this breed gets bored and does not like the same lesions again and again. Socializing them well as pups helps them get on with other people, pets, and other dogs. Set house rules to give these bright dogs boundaries. They are lively but do not require lots of exercise. They do need to walk daily to burn off energy. Without daily outlets for their physical and mental energy they can become barkers and obsessive. They do not give 100% unquestioning obedience, as a lot of dogs, but are very good with children and love to be with the family. They make good guard dogs and will let you know if they think something is not as it should be.
Health issues: The German Spitz can have some problems and these are eye disease, epilepsy, slipping patella and some have poor mouths which mean premature dental care.
Grooming: The German Spitz needs to have weekly deep grooming, every week, and a quick brush every other day. The coat should never be cut but a light trim of the paws is allowed.
Living conditions: The German Spitz can live in an apartment providing that the breed’s needs are met regarding the mental and physical exercise. They need a small to medium garden.
