Description: The Eskimo dog is also known as the Canadian Eskimo dog. This is a powerfully built dog. This is a dog built to work. They are part of the Spitz breeds. This dog has the American wolf look along with erect triangular ears that are short and thick and the eyes are set in a way to give a serious appearance these are dark in color but you can get hazel or yellow eyes. These are wide set and this adds to the look. The teeth meet in a scissor bite and the jaws are heavy and powerful. The neck is short thick and muscular. The height is 23-27½ inches in the male and 19½-23½ in the female. The weight is 66-88 pounds in the male and 40-66 pounds in the female. The body should be muscular and not fat and have a well developed chest. The legs are wide and strong with the feet being large round and well arched. The tail is bushy and is carried up over the back or curled over the back. The coat sheds annually and is thick and dense this can be from 3-6 inches in length. The male have a mane like neck. The undercoat is short and thick. There is no one color that should dominate this breed or pattern so there is a broad range from white, white with red, grey, black, cinnamon and many more in all patterns and shading. With dogs that are solid face colors you get a mask shading of white around the eyes and some times the muzzle. The Eskimo dog howls not barks.

History: The Eskimo dog is a breed that’s history goes back some 1100 to 2000 years. They have worked with and been a part of the Thule culture of Inuit. This dog has, mostly in more modern times, come from the stock bred by the Eskimo Dog Research Foundation in the Northwest Territories. This was funded by the Governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories. This was due to the fact that in the 1920s there were some 2,000 dogs and by 1963 there was only one dog registered with the AKC and the breed would have gone extinct if not for this work. They bought about 200 dogs for the breeding stock, and they are still rare today. They have for hundreds of years been used as working dogs that can pull 100-180 pounds per dog, and cover 15-70 miles a day. They have been used as a hunting dog, watchdog and as a pack dog in the summer.

Temperament: This is not the dog for the first time owner nor is this the dog for the meek or not active person. They need great leadership and a strong minded owner. Here is a dog that will need to work and it will be up to the owner to provide work. This can take the form of a dog back pack and carrying a load for you on daily walks or jogging with the owner or daily runs with you but this breed will want to be doing something. Without this release of the dog’s energy they can become bored and digging up the garden is one area this will show. They can become big time chewers so exercise is very important for this dog and its overall balance. They will guard the home well and this can be a job but they will need a large garden and good fencing as without the good fencing they expand the area that they guard. They like to be out doors and can adapt to all weathers. Socializing this dog well as a pup will help the dog with new situations and not be so guarded with strangers. Training needs to be done from a young pup and this will help the leadership working bond. Training needs to be firm but calm with the owner having a natural authority. They are a loyal and very tough breed of dog coupled with mental intelligence this dog develops a deep bond with the owner. They tend to have a strong prey drive and are not good with other pets. This dog will need to know that all humans are above them and with their bright minds are fairly easy to train but it is important that the training carries on and that house rules are put in place as this is a strong dog.

Health issues: The Eskimo dog can have health issues and these are; PRA, epilepsy, hip dysplasia and juvenile cataract.

Grooming: The Eskimo dog only needs weekly brushing, to remove any dead hair. While this dog is shedding the hair comes out in clumps and grooming is needed daily.

Living conditions: If the Eskimo dog gets good runs and work daily they may be able to live in an apartment this dog really needs a big well fenced garden that it can roam and guard.
