Coonhound Dog Breed Health Issues, History, Temperament, Living Conditions, Grooming and More
History. The coonhounds have a long history but, again, dependant on the specific breed as to what that history is. Overall the Coonhounds were bred to be the best they could be at certain things; they may have been bred for better scent abilities or for greater stamina or speed. The reason behind any of this breeding is to develop the ultimate Coonhound that is the best at all things required for Raccoon hunting. They also need to be a good companion and be trainable. One day someone will breed the coonhound super dog but not quite yet, the breeders still think there are improvements to be made.
Temperament. As hunting dogs there are certain traits common to all but it is probably a good idea to look up the specific breed you are looking for to get the best idea of how your dog will be. Coonhounds are instinctive hunters and should not be left with smaller household pets. They are all active working dogs and require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. As with all dogs, but especially working dogs, you need to assert yourself as the pack leader. These dogs will sense weakness and behavior problems will occur if you are not firm, but kind, consistent and in control. Most are fine with children but again you need to check the specifics.
Health issues. This varies between individuals but overall they are a healthy breed with few problems and tend to live over 10 years
Grooming. All will require their ears checking for any signs of infection, and general brushing.
Living conditions. Coonhounds tend not to do well in apartments and need at least a medium sized garden or yard and probably larger, which is fenced and secure. They love the family and do not like living outdoors.
