CHIWEENIE Dog Breed Health Issues, Grooming, Temperament, Description, History and More

CHIWEENIE Dog Breed

Description: The Chiweenie is a hybrid of two pure breed dogs these are the Chihuahua and the Dachshund. It is best to read up on both parent lines to give you a clearer picture of the dog you may be getting. Remember this is a mix of both and so you will get some of each dog. The Chiweenie is a small dog that is about 8 inches in height and the weight is from 5 pounds to 10 pounds and this will depend on the size of the dogs used to breed this dog. The Chiweenie normally has a long body and is of the same build as the Dachshund. The ears are more commonly that of the Chihuahua but you can have the floppy ears of the Dachshund. There are a few pups that have one up and one folded forward but this is not the norm. The head tends to be very small. The eyes are large and can be black, brown or green in color. The muzzle is medium to long. The neck is most commonly broad, with the body being slim. The tail is normally long and the whole body seems to join in when the dog wags its tail. The coat colors can varies with the length and how curly the coat is. The range of colors that you see are many but browns, tans, blacks with or with out tan markings are the most common. The life expectancy is about 15 years but this is not a true time as the breed is young.

History: As the Chiweenie is young in terms of history there is not much known to date. The parent’s history is very old. Time will set the standards of this dog and if you have one then you are part of the new history.

Temperament: This is a dog of good nature and will want to be with its family. They can attach to one person and feel very lost if that person is not there. This is a dog that has intelligent parents and is intelligent themselves. Training this dog will be fairly easy although some owners have said about a stubborn streak. Calm good leadership works well for this dog as does firm but kind training, they will not respond well to harsh methods of training but praise and fun is the key. The Chiweenie is good with families and if socialized well can be good with children. Socializing this dog helps them to cope with new situations and not be shy with strangers. The training is also about the dog knowing you are the pack leader as without this the dog can quickly rule the home and small dog syndrome can happen. This is where the dog can get behavioral problems and even become aggressive. This dog loves to be cuddled and will want to snuffle down with you under the covers at night. If over loved they can become very needy and this is where the right training and house rules will help the dog to know their place and be happy. This dog loves to play and will need mental and physical activities daily. They are energetic so walks daily are really needed for the dog to burn up some of their energy.

Health issues: The Chiweenie can have knee problems, watery eye problems allergies to pollen and ear infections. Check the health of both parents with good breeders before you get this dog.

Grooming: The Chiweenie is a fairly easy dog to keep clean and tidy. Brush the coat through at least weekly and that is all that is needed. The skin tends to be of good health. Check the ears for any sign of infection weekly.

Living conditions: The Chiweenie is a good lap dog and living in an apartment is fine for this dog. They will need a few walks a day and have play sessions using their mental abilities. A small garden is fine for this dog; make sure the fencing is good.
