CHINESE FOO Dog Breed

Description: The Chinese Foo Dog is a rare breed. They come in three sizes and these are Toy 10 inches or less, Miniature 10-15 inches and the Standard which is over 15 inches. The weights being; small up to 20 pounds, medium 21-50 pounds and the large which is 51 pounds and over. The Chinese Foo Dog is compact and square in profile. The bones are strong and substantial. The face is broad, the muzzle is the same length as the back of the head. The teeth meet in a scissor bite even or reverse scissor bite. The tongue can be blue-black and or pink-red. The eyes are almond shape medium in size and are dark brown in colour. The ears are set high and are erect when the dog is alert, these are fairly small. The neck is strong and some loose skin is allowed around the neck. The chest is deep and somewhat broad. The body is short but muscular. The feet are slightly oval and are small. The tail is set high and is carried up over the back of the dog. The Chinese Foo Dog has a double coat that is thick, hard with a soft undercoat that is woolly. There are two lengths and these are short plush or long rough. Colours are black, black and tan, blue, brown- sable, brown, fawn, orange, red, sable and wolf-grey.

History: This dog comes from China and from the area called Sinkiang. There are two thoughts as to the origins of this breed one is that it is a mix of Northern European hunting dogs and the Chow Chow is a very ancient dog for China that dates back a very long time and is known for its black tongue. The other thought is that this dog is the missing link between the Chow Chow and the Chinese wolf. This breed has been a working dog and has been used to hunt, herd and as a watchdog . The Chinese Foo Dog is the mascot of the Tongs, which are Chinese clans or associations that are the oldest secret cult in the world. The Tongs bred and kept this dog as their symbol and they believed the Chinese Foo Dog brings good luck to the owner. The first owner of the Chinese Foo Dog in the USA was Brad Trom who has worked hard to show this breed and get others to be aware of the breed.

Temperament: This has been a good working dog for a long time and it has great courage and is hardy, alert to the slightest changes. The Chinese Foo Dog is active and will need good daily walks to burn up some of that energy. This is a bold dog that is friendly and makes a good family pet providing that the owner is a good pack leader. The Chinese Foo Dog is devoted to the owner and the family. Socialize this dog well as a puppy, this will help the dog to accept new situations. They are good watch dogs and make good guardians. This dog is able to think for itself. Good basic training is a must as this helps the owner to be the pack leader and the dog will understand it is you that sorts out problems and they do not have to do everything. They can be domineering so are not suitable for the first time dog owner.

Health issues: There are no health issues with the Chinese Foo dog but it is best to check with breeders and the clubs.

Grooming: Weekly grooming of the coat is needed with this breed. Check ears, eyes and teeth for any signs of problems. Bath a Chinese Foo only when extremely needed as the coat is weather resistant and you can damage the coat with over bathing.

Living conditions: The Chinese Foo Dog can live in an apartment if they have been given enough daily walks and activities. They will need a medium size garden that has good fencing.
