BAGLE HOUND Dog Breed History, Temperament, Health Issues, Grooming and More

BAGLE HOUND Dog Breed

Description: This dog is a crossbreed, between the Basset Hound and Beagle, both of which are pureblood breeds. This is not the case for the Bagle Hound, that is a hybrid. As a puppy they tend to look like the Beagle but having slightly longer bodies. As they get older they tend to look more like the Basset Hound in body. The face tends to look like the Beagle face and the coloring is usually that of the Beagle but there have been a few that follow the Basset coloring, but this is not the norm. They have the ears of the Basset as well as the placid personality. They have the Beagle bay voice but rest assured it is not used as much as the purebred Beagle. The Bagle should have a square head and long but the ears are not too folded. The eyes are slightly droopy, but not too much, and are dark in color. The chest is deep. The legs are short but strong. Height will be 12-15 inches. Weight is about 25-30+ pounds. The body is like the Beagle, and it is strong and muscular. With a short but dense coat which most commonly is the coloring of the Basset. This is usually black and tan, red, white and chestnut or sand. It is possible to have the Beagle coloring but this is rare.

History: The Bagle came about because of hunters that wanted the best from the Basset Hound as they had a superior nose. They also wanted the hard work and drive from the Beagle Hound, so they crossed the breeds to get a great scent dog that is a hard working hound. The rest of the history is not clear, but they do have a good following in the USA.

Temperament: For the best way to know how the Bagle temperament will be it is best to check out both breeds and to talk to local breeders, but some things we know are; they are great at following a scent and so will need to be walked on a lead in open areas. They are very playful and will love to play all day. This dog has fair to high energy that needs to be used. When on the hunt they have more than enough energy. They love to do things and are not just happy with sitting down all day, even if these are games like fetch the ball. They are intelligent and will need firm but gentle training to be consistent and fair. Their temperament is normally good and friendly, with a mild nature. They need good, not meek, pack leaders and to follow the rules of the house. Potty training can be slow but with the right approach they get there in the end. Good with children and it is best for the child to learn young leadership skills to keep the dog informed that humans are in charge. Generally good with other dogs but socializing this dog well will help the dog throughout its life. They will love their daily walks. They do need room to run and play and so a garden is needed. They can be stubborn at times. Please read up on the Basset Hound and the Beagle Hound to get a better picture of temperament.

Health issues: The Bagle may be prone to epilepsy and ear problems. Bloat maybe a problem and it will be best to feed them 2 or 3 small meals a day and not ½ hour before or after exercise.

Grooming: This dog needs little grooming and brushing weekly will normally be fine. Check the ears weekly for any signs of infection.

Living conditions: If given enough exercise this dog will do fine in an apartment, but they will need a garden as they can get bored inside.
