AZAWAKH Dog Breed History, Temperament, Health Issues, Grooming and More
History: The Azawakh comes from Africa from the region of Sahel. They were bred by the nomadic tribes from the Southern Sahara. These dogs were used as hunting dogs as well as guard dogs. They have also been companion dogs. This dog in its native setting would spot a hyena or other predator coming too close and they quickly become alert and other Azawakhs’ join them and then they chase off the predator or catch the predator and kill it, as a pack. This dog has always been a practical working dog, but it really seems to be loyal no matter what the setting is. This breed also helps in the hunting of game for the family and can chase the wounded game and even finish bringing the game down. They are endurance hounds. They were recognized by the UKC in 1993.
Temperament: The Azawakh is a hunting dog and protector and so good socialization is important from a young age. They bond very strongly with their family, and it can be hard to re-settle this dog when they are adult. This dog will want to be part of the family, and it is not good in kennels. As this breed is intelligent it is best for you to set boundaries and start training when they are young. A calm, firm pack leader is required to bring out the best in this dog. You will have to be even tempered as this dog can be aloof, and if they do not feel it is worth doing something they will not do it. They learn quickly and also learn your weak points so training and rules are needed if not then you can have a dog that will seem like a spoilt child. They can live happy with cats, and it is best to have them raised together. This dog is wonderful with children but like all dogs the child has to show respect and young leadership. They are naturally standoffish with strangers. Here is a very fast dog that has an independent mind that will love nothing more than good long walks and stretching out with their family. This dog can travel at 37mph when the terrain is flat. They will love to have good long walks and some time off the lead to really show their speed in a safe place. They are capable of jumping great heights, but do respect most boundaries depending on what is on the other side, 5ft fencing is usually high enough.
Health issues: This is a healthy dog and no problems have been recorded.
Grooming: The Azawakh needs brushing and /or combing with a bristle brush, as needed. It is an average shedder.
Living conditions: The Azawakh is fine in an apartment providing, they have had the exercise that they require.
