AUSTRIAN GRAND BRACKES Dog Breed
History: This is a hunting hound. There are three breeds that come under this name, you have, the Austrian black and tan, Tyrolean hound and Styrian coarse-haired hound these are collective under the Austrian Grand Brackes name. These dogs hunt in the mountainous areas of Austria. These dogs have been, and are still, highly valued as good hunting dogs. The history goes back to the times of Celtic myths and the dog is talked about for its great courage loyalty and great bravery, all attribute sought in the times of old. This breed is not well known outside of Austria. In 1884 the Austrian Grand Brackes was recognized as a distinctive breed. This is a rare breed and even more rare outside its native country.
Temperament: This dog is a hunting dog with great talents at hunting quietly. It can cope with high altitudes. They hunt hares and foxes even with a cold scent. This is a well mannered dog and although not ideal for a family pet, if you love the outdoors and can walk this dog well, it should be fine. This dog needs a good pack leader with natural firm and fair leadership. This dog is good with obedience. This dog is unsuitable for city life and the owner will need to be rural at least. They are intelligent and loyal. This dog is good with children. If socialized well they are tolerant and good with other dogs and non canine pets. The Austrian Grand Brackes are affectionate to their family. However, this dog is really a working dog, and it excels with hunting, they can follow a scent for hours. Training is not hard with this dog as it likes to please. This dog is used to hard work and will not take well to just sitting around.
Health issues: This is a good healthy breed and there are no known problems.
