There is a distinct furrow between the eyes. The dog has a strong muzzle that has a square shape. The best bite is a reverse scissor bite, but a moderate under bite, even bite, or scissor bite, are acceptable. The nose can be many colours from black red, brown or grizzle. Black is the most wanted colour. The ears have a few types that are acceptable, these are rose cropped, in countries that allow cropping, half-pricked, and forward folded. The eyes can be of any colour but black eye rims are desirable in the white dog. The neck is tapered but very muscular. The legs are heavy boned and strong, these are straight. The tail is thick at the base and is low set. The coat is smooth and very short. This comes in the colours brindle, with red brindle, white, red, tan, piebald, white, fawn. The height is 22-28 inches in the dog and 20-26 inches in the females. The weight is 70-120 pounds in the dog and 60-100 pounds in the female. The life expectancy is up to 16 years.

History: This dog, the American Bulldog, has a history which is not just as a fighting dog but as a great all-round working dog. He could guard, hunt, cattle driver and stock guard and is faster, with more agility, than the English Bulldog. John Johnson from Summerville in Georgia is the person who brought this dog back from the brink extinction.

After the II World War he found as many dogs as he could and started work on breeding this dog back, and he has been breeding this dog longer than anyone else.

Temperament: The American Bulldog is a very loyal and reliable dog. They are strongly protective and need you to be a firm pack leader, to bring out the best in this dog. It is best to socialize this dog well to stop it getting shy with strangers. Training is best to start young with a strong minded owner, that understands the dog role, will bring out the best in this dog. They can be aggressive with other dog. This breed loves to be with people, and understand their place in the structure of the family. They need to have a lot of daily exercise both mental and physical to stop them becoming highly strung. While it is a good guard dog this dog is not normally hostile. This dog has a lot of self-confidence.

Health issues: American Bulldogs are prone to hip dysplasia, but is generally healthy otherwise.

Grooming: The American Bulldog is easy to keep clean and looking nice by brushing weekly. Bath only when it is really needed. This is an average shedder.

Living conditions: With the right amount of physical and mental exercise, daily, the American Bulldog can be fine in an apartment. They will be best with at least an average size garden.
