Description: The Alpine Dachsbracke is a hunting dog that is short in the leg but is still sturdy strong boned and has a dense coat. The height is 13-16½ inches. The weight is 33-40 pounds. The head is slightly arched. The muzzle is strong with the nose being black, as are the lips that are close fitting. The teeth meet in a scissor bite or pincer bite. The eyes are dark brown. The ears are pendent and hang longer than the cheeks. The Alpine Dachsbrackeneck is muscular but not long. The body is strong and has a good muscular look. The chest is deep and the legs are straight and strong but seem short in comparison to the body. The feet are round with compacted looking toes. The tail is set high it is thicker at the base and is long.  The Alpine Dachsbracke dog has a double coat that is close fitting. The ideal colour is dark deer red this can have black with it lightly, throughout the whole coat. There is black with clearly distinct red-brown markings on the head, legs and feet and under the tail. A white star on the chest is also permitted. This dog’s life expectancy is about 12 years.

History: The Alpine Dachsbrackes history can be traced back to the 1880’s where one of this breed accompanied Crown Prince Rudolf of Habsburg on hunting trips to Egypt and Turkey. In 1932 this breed was recognized by Austria as the third Scent hound breed. In 1975 Austria was declared as the country of origin. This dog has been used throughout its history as a hunting dog being able to hunt and scent low to the ground. This dog was used to hunt down wounded deer in all terrains and even high altitudes.

Temperament: This dog, the Alpine Dachsbracke, was a hunting dog and like its forefathers this dog has stamina and will need lots of daily exercise which has to include walks. This dog will love to be used as a hunting dog, and in this area you will see the dog’s nature shine through. Here is an intelligent and good natured dog. This is a robust dog that can keep up with the most hardened walker over fields and hills. They need a firm and consistent pack leadership and with this, they will be a good happy dog that loves all. Care is recommended around other small pets such as rabbits, and maybe cats as it has a good hunting instinct.

Health issues: There are no health issues.

Grooming: The Alpine Dachsbracke only needs brushing weekly with a good bristle brush, to keep the coat clean and tidy. Bath only when really necessary and use a mild shampoo. Check ears weekly for any signs of infection.

Living conditions: The Alpine Dachsbracke dog does fine in an apartment providing you give the required exercise daily. This breed can do ok without a garden.
