ALASKAN Klee Kai History, Health Issues, Description and More
Description: The Alaskan Klee Kai is a small version of the Alaskan Husky. This is a spitz type of dog. The Alaskan Klee Kai was bred to be a companion dog. With the toy size being no more than 13 inches, the miniature being over 13 inches and the standard being over 15 inches. This breed is similar to the standard Siberian Husky with the difference in the muzzle, which is comparatively shorter. The ears are larger. The tail is also set higher, and of course it is shorter in height than the Siberian Husky. If the Alaskan Klee Kai is over 17½ inches it is a serious fault. The weight is 10-40 pounds. This dog can have Bi Eyes, which means one eye is one color while the other eye is another color. They have the same dense coat as the Siberian Husky and the colors that we see are; black and white, this can blend or be in contrast, grey and white this can come in a lot of options of coloring, red and white this can be cinnamon or a dark auburn and shades of white. This dogs' life expectancy is about 14 years.
History: The Alaskan Klee Kai is a fairly new breed, having been developed in the 1970’s. They have been bred as companion dogs, as the original dogs were bigger and stronger. They have come from the Alaskan, American Eskimo and the Siberian Husky. The breeders chose the smallest of these breeds to build up the stock of smaller dogs until they got the dog that they wanted. This breed was developed in Wasilla in Alaska by Linda Spurlin. They were released to the general public in 1988. The Alaskan Klee Kai was recognized by the ARBA (American Rare Breed Association) in 1995 and then the UKC in 1997. This dog has been gaining in popularity.
Temperament: Here is a small dog that still has high energy levels and will need plenty of daily mental, and physical, exercise. Without this they can become highly strung. This dog will need to socialize well from a young puppy and throughout its life. This dog can be a bit stand offish with strangers and make good watchdogs. They have a high preying drive. Don’t trust this dog with small pets such as rabbits, birds, and even cats. They need firm consistent training, that is gentle, and they need to see you as the pack leader at all times. This dog is best suited to a family with older children who can show leadership and will not poke or tease the dog, or these dogs may well nip them to tell them off. This is an intelligent dog and will love obedience training classes as they love to please the owner. They are fantastic at agility and for them, it is working and using up their energies. With the right amount of exercise this dog can be docile and are very loving. An Alaskan Klee Kai wants a calm but firm person around them and this will bring out the best in the breed. Always avoid small dog syndrome, as if this dog thinks it is the boss of the home problems will happen like over barking, dog aggressiveness and more undesired behavior. This can be put right or not happen with pack leadership from the owner and good rules and training.
Health issues: The Alaskan Klee Kai is fairly young, and so we may not have a full picture of the health issues. This is an overall good health breed with responsible breeders having health tested and registering so please check the breeder is doing this. Some things linked to this breed are; liver disease, pyometra, cardiac issues, thyroid disease.
Grooming: The Alaskan Klee Kai will need grooming weekly. Bath this breed only rarely, as it can strip the coat of natural oils.
